Jon and Kate Gosselin, stars of TLC’s mega-hit Jon and Kate Plus 8, have topped gossip headlines for three solid weeks now and rumors are quickly evolving into talks of an impending divorce. Rumors of cheating, secret marriage contracts and philandering have all hit mainstream news and E! Even went as far as to create a quick special regarding the rumors and allegations behind the perfect family.
Readers online have spent a good portion of the last few weeks pointing fingers at the couple. Some believe Jon’s cheating and “whining” is the catalyst for the families spiral while others insist that Kate’s shrewish behavior has pushed mild-mannered Jon over the edge and sent this family into the toilet. A greater majority believe the pair has gotten exactly what they deserved for exploiting their multiples for monetary gain for years. You know what they say, revenge is best served cold. While all of the above statements may be true what is incredibly astonishing is the manner in which family members and friends have taken to the airwaves to discuss the imploding family.
Kate Gosselin’s brother, Kevin Krieder, and his wife Jodi, both of whom have appeared on the show, have spoken online and in national interviews to discuss the exploitation of their nieces and nephews. The pair claim that they are concerned for the safety and well-being of the kids and believe that filming them is exploitative. While that would be all fine and good word around the blogosphere has it that Jodi and Kevin have received hefty sums of money to dish the dirt on Kate’s behavior, Jon’s cheating and the children’s turmoil.
It would stand to reason that the pair is getting paid to dish or to start an all out smear campaign. If they were so concerned about the youngster’s work schedule why did they wait so long to speak out?The sextuplets have been on television for three solid years now. Could it be that Jodi and Kevin were simply looking for a payday and some much needed revenge for Kate cutting them from the cast line-up?
The E! Special also featured interviews from family friends, neighbors and even the brother of Jon’s reported mistress. The brother was classy enough to discuss the door that Johnny-boy was sneaking in and out of and the things that went “bump” in the night while Jon had sleepover’s with a 23 -year-old teacher.
The willingness of these individuals to talk about the situation revolving around the family raises and interesting question of how celebrity status can affect those who attempt to maintain a “normal” family life. If Jon and Kate had hopped out of Pennsylvania and taken up friendships with the celebrities that prance around New York and L.A. Instead of staying close to their hometown one would have to wonder if there would be so many people willing to gossip. The seasoned celeb or celebrity hanger-on knows all about the “no comment” and few will be heard speaking about the down and dirty details of nasty divorces and marital problems. Those in rural Pennsylvania that know the couple well are your average Joe’s who seem to think talking to the media is like gossiping to a neighborhood hairdresser or the barista at Starbucks.
