Xseed Games is bringing the Japanese horror title, Feel, to North American under the name Ju-On: The Grudge in October.
As you may have guessed from the title, the upcoming Nintendo Wii game is inspired by the Japanese and American horror film series, The Grudge. The first film came out in Japan in 2000 under the same name as the upcoming video game title. A Japanese sequel would follow in 2003. The next year, the original movie got an American remake with “Ju-On” removed from the title. Finally, the second American remake, The Grudge 2, was released in 2006.
The story behind the films is about a curse placed upon a house after someone dies holding a deep grudge. As a result, future inhabitants of the house will be killed and the curse will continue to spread across new areas.
Takashi Shimizu is the director behind all four movies. Aside from the working on other films, he also directed several horror-based television shows. After spending his career on scaring viewers, Takashi Shimizu is moving on the interactive realm for his latest horror project.
Like his movies, Takashi Shimizu’s game had to stand out against stiff competition. The so-called survival-horror genre began in 1996 with the original Resident Evil. The new genre puts players in scary situations. Because video games are interactive, players are more immersed and engrossed than simply watching a movie. Therefore, the horror found in video games is greater than the ones found in films.
After Resident Evil, the survival-horror genre started to take off with games like Clock Tower, Fatal Frame and Silent Hill. Horror titles have come few and far between recently, however. This is because, like the horror films, most of the survival-horror games come from Japan. With video games getting more expensive to make, many Japanese gaming decided to scale back on creating niche survival-horror games on the Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
Therefore, Ju-On: The Grudge fills in a big hole for survival-horror fans on the Nintendo Wii, especially since Fatal Frame IV won’t be coming out in North America. In the first-person perspective, you will wander through several haunted places in the game including a hospital and mannequin factory.
Ju-On: The Grudge on the Nintendo Wii also features a unique two-player mode where one player plays the game normally while the other one try to scare him by activating events. This mode certainly separates the upcoming title from other survival-horror games.
Ju-On: The Grudge will be released in October, just in time for Halloween.
