Kris Allen made to the American Idol Top 3, even after a lackluster performance during “Rock Week” that was sure to put him in the bottom three (but didn’t). He has been the dark horse rising throughout the competition and, with the exception of last week’s weak “Come Together,” a song written and made famous by the Beatles, he has shown strong musical skills, excellent song choice savvy, an amazing ability to uniquely arrange familiar songs so that they sound fresh, and proven that he can sing just about anything. So there is really no mystery how Kris Allen made it to the Top 3.
But no one would have chosen him to make the Top 3 when the Lucky 13 started their run nine weeks ago…
This past week American Idol flew Kris Allen, Danny Gokey, and Adam Lambert — the Top 3 Finalists — back to their hometowns. For Kris Allen, this meant returning to the small city of Conway, Arkansas.
According to KrisAllenNation.com, Kris had a full schedule ahead of him. Early on, he did several television and radio interviews, stopped off for an appearance at an AT&T store, and did a photo shoot on a riverboat, the Arkansas Queen, which dropped him off for a performance at the Riverfest Amphitheatre in Little Rock, the state capital.
Later, Kris Allen returned to his alma mater, the University of Central Arkansas, where he performed before attending the parade thrown in his honor in downtown Conway. He capped off the evening with a concert in Conway’s Simon Park, which may have been attended by the largest crowd in the Park’s history.
Then it was back to Hollywood, rehearsals, and getting ready for the Top 3 performance night against favorites Danny Gokey and Adam Lambert. After showing each of the finalists’ visits to their respective hometowns, the three will perform a song of the American Idol judges choice and a song of their own choosing. According to Foxes On Idol, the judges’ pick for Kris Allen is OneRepublic’s “Apologize,” a very nice selection that seems very well suited to Kris Allen’s vocal stylings.
Although he is considered the dark horse in the competition, it would be unfair to think of Kris Allen as simply the third wheel in an already preordained American Idol finale. He has made it this far. Apparently, there are millions of people voting for him. And if Adam Lambert pulls off another week with a reaction like he received when he sang “Ring of Fire” or “Feeling Good,” the finale might be between Danny Gokey and Kris Allen. On the other hand, Danny Gokey almost saw his hopes at singing in the finale end last week during “Rock Week” when he let out those glass-shattering screeches during his rendition of Aerosmith’s “Dream On.” The performance, although he laughed about it later, put him in the bottom three (and the bottom two) for the first time. Many believed that Allison Iraheta should have been in the Top 3 after Danny’s less-than-stellar performance.
But she did not make it through. Danny Gokey did. And he and Adam Lambert are the two guy’s that Kris Allen has to contend with to get to the American Idol finale.
Kris Allen faces off against his fellow contestants Tuesday evening on Fox Television.
