Preparing for a long distance relocation is one of the most stressful things that you can do. It requires a lot of planning, a lot of money and very little sleep. In the past your only options were to either pack and move all of your belongings yourself, or hiring a full service moving company to do it for you. Today you have a third option, you load the storage compartment and the moving company transports the container for you. This option is usually less expensive than hiring a full service mover and in many cases can be cheaper than renting a truck and handling the move all on your own.
There are at least two moving companies that allow you to pack and load your belongings into a pod or storage container and that then transport your container to your new location for you. The first is U-pack. This company has been in business for over 85 years and has an excellent rating given by epinions.com. They offer several options for packing and moving, and charge you only for the storage space that you use. This means that if you do not use all of your allotted space that you can reduce your fee by about $159 per square foot. They also have storage facilities that you can use to store your belongings prior to your move date or while you are selling your old house. U-pack offers both storage cubes, which fit neatly into a parking space and semi-truck tailor containers.
The second company that offers a semi-DIY moving service is Pods. This company has been in business since 1998 and offers similar services as U-pack. However, the Podzilla system used by Pods places the storage container on the ground so you don’t have to use a ramp for loading and unloading. This is definitely an advantage. On the downside, this company is still developing its service territories and it is not available in as many cities as U-pack is.
Saving Money on Semi-DIY Moving Services
There are several ways to save money on semi-DIY moving services like those offered by U-pack and Pods. The first is to use as few pods or storage containers as possible. This means reduce what you have to move down to the bare minimum. Sell, give away or throw away things that you no longer want or need. Next schedule your move on non-peak days. Mid-week is generally cheaper than scheduling pick ups and drop offs between Friday and Monday. Finally, coordinate your move so that you don’t have to store your containers and so that you are at your destination when your containers arrive. This can save you hundreds of dollars in storage and re-delivery fees.
