In light of everything else that’s happening on LOST right now, concerning oneself with the character’s love lives seems almost insane. Sawyer and Juliet are happily living in 1977 as members of the DHARMA Initiative following a period of intense, nasal-blood-inducing time travel, yet fans are still on the edge of their seats wondering who will end up with Kate – Jack or Sawyer?
I realize LOST is just a show, I do, but for that precious hour once a week it is real, and it baffles the mind that these characters don’t all just go absolutely crazy. At some point it seems that being stranded on an any island would get to you. If that wasn’t enough to do it, monsters and time traveling surely would. Despite the fact that most people I know would be rolling around on the ground licking shoes and speaking gibberish in the face of all that the LOST writers have thrown at the characters, they still always seem to have time for relationships.
Sawyer and Kate had a friendly reunion when she made her way back to the island, but it initially lacked much more of a spark than Sawyer and Hurley’s reunion. Still, there was something in that look Sawyer gave Kate at the end that said, “Yeah, I remember you.” (Not long before Sawyer had claimed to have forgotten, and gotten over, Kate.)
Sawyer, of course, is now seemingly happily living with Juliet in DHARMAland. Sawyer has evolved into a trusted, mature leader, even staying well-groomed and reading books. It almost appears that Sawyer has finally found true happiness, perhaps even his true calling. It will be interesting to see how he reconciles the past (future) and present (past) now that his old friends are back.
In tonight’s episode of LOST, Juliet was visibly upset when she found out that Kate had made her way back to the island. Juliet has found herself in an unfortunate situation, first competing for Jack’s affections when it was clear he still had feelings for Kate, and now having Kate invading her new life with Sawyer. Kate has, for the most part, been able to keep both Sawyer and Jack interested in her, and she juggled them freely.
Three years is a long time, and one has to wonder if Sawyer’s feelings for Juliet have finally allowed him to break free from his love for Kate. I was almost ready to answer that question, as it appeared Sawyer had long since moved on. There was something about that wave at the end of tonight’s episode though that made me wonder. It seems clear that Kate is not over Sawyer, despite the fact that she ran back to Jack’s bed before returning to the island, but the question remains – is Sawyer really over Kate?
I don’t know what it is about Kate that almost makes me feel sorry for her for not being able to decide between the two (it’s a tough call!), but maybe Jack and Sawyer would both be doing themselves a favor if they took a break from Kate. After all, there are more pressing matters to deal with on the island than who Kate will sleep with next. For instance, “Why are we in 1977?” Or, as Hurley so eloquently put it, “Uh…what?”
