It was an odd Wednesday night last night for many people, with no new Lost to go over. But Lost’s Season 5, Episode 9 show did not air, mainly because ABC needs to stretch the season out until May. True, ABC promised that Lost seasons would run nonstop – but if Lost ran 17 straight hours each week, starting from January 21, the season would end in late April. ABC can’t have the season end that early, so Lost Season 5, Episode 9 will not air until next Wednesday.
This is a good time otherwise for a Lost break, since it is midseason now. With nine more hours left in the year, Lost has now gotten everyone back to the island – though they may not all be in the same time period. The Season 5, Episode 9 program will need to promise a lot after keeping us waiting for two weeks, and may just do that.
Before Lost went on a mini-break, it established that Sawyer and the “left-behinders” were stuck in the era of the DHARMA Initiative after Locke’s final push of the wheel. In the three years since, they have become full fledged DHARMA members while waiting for the Oceanic 6 to return.
Of course, Sawyer already has a good life as head of DHARMA security, and with Juliet as his new love, before Jack, Kate and Hurley return to threaten everything.
The preview for Season 5, Episode 9 shows Sawyer trying to integrate Jack, Kate, and Hurley into DHARMA before they can threaten their cover story. However, Sayid is there too, and is on his own before being caught by DHARMA – putting him into a dangerous reunion with Sawyer.
What isn’t hinted at in the preview is the beginning of a very big arc for Benjamin Linus – both young and old. The grown up Ben is likely in 2007, on DHARMA’s Hydra Island. But in 1977, Ben is still a young man in DHARMA, and not yet a mass murderer.
Next week’s episode will begin a four-episode arc featuring young Ben in 1977 DHARMA, which may finally explain some of his origins.
However, there are no guarantees that the entire second half of the year will run uninterrupted. To make sure the season finale airs in mid-May, another one-week break may take place on April 22, with yet another clip show airing. Lost would then return on April 29 to air the 100’th episode of the show, and 14’th of the season – which is rumored to focus on Daniel Faraday and his time-policewoman mother, Eloise Hawking.
But this first break in the Lost action is almost over, with the Season 5, Episode 9 show, entitled “Namaste” to air on March 18 at 9 p.m.
