Lucky Tiger barber shop brand hair and skin products have been around since the 1930s. Ownership has changed hands several times but the essence of the product line has remained the same. Siblings, Stacey Rosen and Bruce Last took over the brand four years ago and have recently launched a new line of organic products through Nordstroms and Nordstroms.com.
Growing up together in this business, they saw the 60s make bad hair and even body odor fashionable. Tragically, those trends made way for the big hair of the 80s and fortunately, in the crisis now that is the metrosexual, Mr. Last reassures us, “that old fashioned good grooming is back.”
They toyed with the idea of marketing the Lucky Tiger man as the retrosexual but that also smacks of being trendy. “We’re here to be enduring,” he says, “and we don’t want to ruin the classic longevity of the Lucky Tiger Brand.”
Otherwise, they feel they can only add to the name by offering men products that are all organic. The Lucky Tiger Kit includes liquid cream shave and after shave, eye serum and face scrub and moisturizer that won’t pollute your appearance with artificial fragrances and chemicals.
“We just use natural essential oils,” he says, which are derived from orange tangerine and grapefruit. He likens it to taking vitamins for your skin that keeps the moisture in and the aging away.
Bruce and Stacey are not new to organics either. They’ve been marketing these types of products to Mrs. Greens and Whole Foods for the last 20 years and when Lucky Tiger became available they knew an opportunity was before them. It became an easy sell to Nordstroms too.
Part of the program is just to keep it simple. Out there, men are inundated with products for every type of skin and hair with ten different shaving creams buried beneath all kinds of foams and gels.
“I’m the classic Lucky Tiger guy, when I have too many different decisions to make,” he says, “I run the other way.” Lucky Tiger idiot proofs grooming by putting the basics all in one box.
They know that not every head is the same either and take into consideration that some four-heads recede to five or six. All products have thickening elements included but Lucky Tiger does not claim to be a miracle worker.
“Losing your hair is not the end of the world, it’s the beginning of a new grooming experience for you,” he says. So Lucky Tiger has a four step grooming kit to take you partly or completely over the top.
A step up from there, Lucky Tiger remembers its hair roots by not forgetting the crew cut. The butch style from the 50s isn’t exactly back in full force but Lucky Tiger’s Butchwax is ready if you are.
Going back before that, the name probably derives from old catch phrases like “Cool Cat” or “Hip Dude” and he sees some of the Lucky Tiger man in Brad Pitt, George Clooney and such. But the name Lucky Tiger man is embodied in classics like Frank Sinatra, Paul Newman and Sean Connery.
Like James Bond, – whether they fell out of a plane or off a cliff – says Mr. Last, “he lands, there’s usually a woman next to him, his tie is perfect, his hair is perfect, his cigarette is still lit…that’s our guy.” And he’s always a gentleman.
