The New York Mets are looking to make the playoffs again after a two year absence. The New York Mets re-signed Oliver Perez and brought in Francisco Rodriguez and J. J. Putz. Will it be enough to win the National League East?
Major League Baseball 2009 Preview: New York Mets Strengths
The offense should be one of the best in the National League, especially if Daniel Murphy or Ryan Church has a good season. The starting rotation problems were greatly over exaggerated even before Mike Pelfrey joined the team last year so this year it shouldn’t be a big concern. The bullpen is strengthened by the additions of J. J. Putz and Francisco Rodriguez. The New York Mets also have one of the best running teams with Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran and David Wright. Even Luis Castillo went 17 for 19 in steals in 2008.
Major League Baseball 2009 Preview: New York Mets Weaknesses
Many wanted the New York Mets to get an outfielder this offseason but they are fine in the outfield with Daniel Murphy and Ryan Church. If one of them falters then Fernando Martinez could be called up or a guy like Matt Holliday could be available at the trade deadline if his team is out of the playoff race.
The bigger concern for the New York Mets should be catcher and second base. Luis Castillo has gotten off to a good start in spring but is still a big question mark. Brian Schneider and Ramon Castro are not very good at the catcher position but fortunately it is a position that most players are weak at.
Major League Baseball 2009 Preview: New York Mets Key Player
They key player for the New York Mets in the 2009 season will probably be the 7th inning reliever. The starting rotation is good enough now to pitch at least six innings every night and J. J. Putz and Francisco Rodriguez will do fine in the 8th and 9th innings but the 7th inning is still a question mark. The 7th inning should still be better than last year since they can now use all their specialists and not have to worry about saving somebody for the last two innings but if the Mets do surrender the lead in the 7th inning than Putz and Rodriguez become moot.
Major League Baseball 2009 Preview: New York Mets Sleeper
It is hard to pick a sleeper on a big market team that is talked about constantly but it might be John Maine. John Maine looked like the number two pitcher in the rotation after a good 2007. In 2008 Maine had injury problems. Meanwhile Mike Pelfrey had a great 2008 and Oliver Perez was talked about constantly during the offseason. John Maine might now be the fourth most talked about pitcher on the Mets but might be the second best.
Major League Baseball 2009 Preview: New York Mets Prediction
The New York Mets will win the National League East. The National League East will be a tough division with Philadelphia, Florida and Atlanta but the New York Mets have enough talent to win 95 games.
