There are not too many good bars around where I live. My boyfriend and I enjoy going out for a cocktail every now and then, and we had off Monday, so we decided to relax at a nearby bar for a few drinks Sunday night. We decided to go to Maynard’s Cafe. It’s only about four or five miles from our home in Glen Burnie.
We have been there a couple times before. The parking lot isn’t too big, but there is some curbside parking available nearby, and you don’t have to pay for parking here like you do in most city areas, so that’s definitely a plus.
It is pretty spacious in the bar. It’s on the darker side in there, but I prefer bars to be dim rather than bright. When it’s too lit up, I feel like I have a spotlight on me in my face, and it bothers me. There are purple Christmas bulbs hanging from the ceiling, which looks okay. It’s a little run down, but the bar provides a decent number of seats and there are ample tables for people to sit elsewhere. On the downside, there is only one stall in the woman’s bathroom. It’s an individual bathroom so if it’s a bit crowded, the wait to use the woman’s restroom might be a bit long. If you’ve been drinking heavily and need to use the bathroom, this can turn into a bad situation! Luckily, Sunday night wasn’t packed so my wait was not even five minutes when I had to go. It was clean and had a good supply of toilet paper. My boyfriend said there were two stalls in the men’s restroom.
They had plenty of big screen televisions all over the bar, so everyone could see them no matter where they sat. I believe they have karaoke with a DJ seven days a week unless they have some special activity such as a live band. Sunday they did have karaoke, but it hadn’t started when we arrived around 8:30. We were unaware there would be karaoke so we put some money in the jukebox. The bartender told us that karaoke usually starts around 9 o’clock, but it was after 9:30 and our music was still playing, thankfully. I am not totally opposed to karaoke per se, but I was glad to hear our music that we chose. The DJ finally started around 10:00, so we got to hear most of our music we selected. The karaoke had some good singers and some not so good singers, like most other bars do with karaoke.
The bartender was friendly and paid attention to our needs and requests. Being a former bartender, I am patient but can be a bit picky about my drinks. Tracey made all of mine perfectly. No complaints there. Tracey was very pleasant, attentive, and made excellent drinks. She was a lot of fun and really seemed to enjoy her job and pay attention to my boyfriend and I while we were there. They had every liquor in stock that we requested for cocktails and shooters. I like to change what I drink and have a variety while I am out at a bar, and when a bar doesn’t have something simple such as flavored vodka or Malibu rum, it can be a little frustrating at times. Luckily, this wasn’t the case here.
One funny thing about this bar is that it serves regular Budweiser beer, but no Bud Light or Bud Ice. My boyfriend prefers Bud Light, but he opted to drink Coors Light since they didn’t serve his usual drink of choice and he didn’t want to drink liquor all night.
The menu included many typical bar appetizers such as wings, onion rings, quesadillas, burgers, and mozzarella sticks. We didn’t analyze the menu too much, so I really couln’t go into detail about that too much. My boyfriend did try some mozzarella sticks and onion rings, which only took a few minutes (less than 10 total from when he ordered) to be prepared and delivered to him. They were served hot and quickly. He thought they were good.
Our check ended up being about $50 with 6% Maryland state sales tax included. We were there for about two hours. We had two small appetizers, several beers and cocktails, and also a couple rounds of shooters. I think the prices at this bar were decent and comparable to the other local bars and restaurants.
While Maynard’s might be a local dive, it’s a fun place with at least one excellent bartender, decent prices, and is close to our house, so we like that. The bathroom situation could be a bit better for the women, and the parking situation could be a little better as well, but, all in all, while it’s not our absolutely favorite bar ever, we will definitely return.
