The Twisted Metal car combat series is one of my favorites. Since there are many games and characters the history of these killing tournaments is quite rich with fun little details. On my Sony PS3 video game system I have downloaded the original PS1 game Twisted Metal 2. Twisted Metal 2 is supposedly the most sold version of the car combat series in history. What made the game fun, aside from blowing up opponents and things such as the Eiffel Tower, were the fun twisted comedy stories about each character. The winner of the Twisted Metal car fighting tournament gets to basically have a wish granted. Of course the old saying “Be careful what you wish for” fully applies and a gamer is treated to some silly, dark humor. I will be showcasing some of the characters from the Twisted Metal series, starting with Twisted Metal 2. In Twisted Metal 2, you destroy things all over the world from Los Angeles, Paris, Hong Kong, Holland, New York, The Amazon, Moscow, and to Antarctica.
A brief breakdown of gameplay for those not familiar: Twisted Metal lets you drive a car around equipped with a machine gun and various other weapons such as homing missiles and napalm. You pick up these weapons on the battlefield with the objective being to destroy all the other similarly equipped cars. Each character also has their own unique “special weapon.” The Twisted Metal tournament is operated by a magical man named Calypso.
CAUTION: SPOILERS CONTAINED WITHIN INFORMATION
SPECTER: Specter is a car driven by Ken Masters. It is a white sports car which I consider to be one of the best all around fighters for the game. Not only is the car Specter very speedy, but also comes with a very useful special weapon. I like Specter’s weapon because they are missiles that will travel through walls with some homing capabilities. This means if you are in a tight bind you can go park, hide, and blasts away through the walls to survive.
Ken Masters, the guy driving Specter, is an aspiring actor. He has sparkling teeth and wears his cool shades on a face that he is quite proud of. If you defeat Twisted Metal 2 with Specter, then Ken Masters asks for the ultimate prize of: wanting the entire world to know his face. Calypso grants this wish by grabbing either side of Ken’s face and stretching it over the world. It is hilarious to see this unfold in cheap comic book animation and with the most over the top voice acting. People in New York look up at the sky, which is now Ken’s face, and Calypso giggles his little giggle; commenting on what a nice face it is indeed.
WARTHOG: Warthog isn’t a very fast vehicle, but then again it is an armored Humvee. Warthog is driven by Captain Rogers, who would be driving slow regardless of the weight of his vehicle because he is one hundred and five years old. Slow driving, but packed with some big bangs Warthog’s special weapon is a series of red, white, and blue missiles. The weapon is great, but even with turbo on full throttle you may have some issues launching this vehicle up on to certain locations.
Captain Rogers wants nothing more than to be young again. If you win the Twisted Metal tournament with his one hundred and five year old self, you get to see him ask Calypso for “the body of a twenty year old.” Too bad he specifically said body, because his wish is granted, giving him a muscular and young body. However, his head remains one hundred and five years old with the results looking somewhat like the shrunken head fellow waiting around in death at the end of that movie Beetlejuice.
