With Mother’s Day just around the corner (May 10, 2009), kids of all ages are scrambling to find that perfect gift for moms and grandmas everywhere. And it’s not easy. Shopping malls and Hallmark stores nationwide are sure to be full this week. But besides getting something for your mother, why not pick up a little something for another mom? Say, your pastor’s wife? Let’s face it: pastor’s wives not only shoulder several responsibilities associated with their husband’s ministry life, but many who have children juggle family schedules and responsibilities as well. And some even go to work every day. Talk about a stress load!
There are several gifts to give that hard-working pastor’s wife/mom. Do a little snooping (perhaps by asking her husband) and find out if there are any particular Christian authors she enjoys reading. Maybe it’s Max Lucado, John Piper, or David Jeremiah. Start by making a trip to your local Christian bookstore, or find one in a nearby area. Some of the best to check out include LifeWay Christian Bookstores (www.lifewaystores.com), Crossroads Books & Gifts (www.crossroadsbookstore.com), and Parable Christian Bookstores (www.parable.com).
For a great, recent female author, try Stormie Omartian’s The Power of a Praying Wife: a book that, in May of 2002, broke a 21-year industry record by landing at number one on the CBA Marketplace bestsellers list for 27 consecutive months. Omartian is also the author of The Power of Praying Woman, The Power of a Praying Parent, and The Power of Praying Together. Stormie and her husband have been married for thirty years and are the proud parents of three grown children. She is a former Christian singer/songwriter and has written hundreds of songs with her husband, including the acclaimed Christian musical Child of the Promise. Any book by Stormie Omartian makes a great Mother’s Day gift for the pastor’s wife.
Bestselling Christian author Beth Moore also recently released her newest Bible study book entitled Esther: It’s Tough Being a Woman. Esther delves head first into the life of one of the most amazing women in the Old Testament, giving the reader a picture of womanly courage filled with countless modern parallels for today’s woman (www.lifewaychristianstores.com).
If books aren’t your pastoral mom’s fancy, try some good, clean Christian comedy in the form of comedienne Chonda Pierce’s latest DVD release: This Ain’t Prettyville. A South Carolina native, Pierce is often termed “The Queen of Clean” and is known for reaching the church audience, particularly women and their families. As a theatre arts major and member of the Christian Comedy Association, she knows how to keep listeners hooked for hours, not to mention keeping their sides splitting. Look for her on DVD in your local Christian bookstore.
And speaking of DVDs, Sherwood Picture’s 2008 Fireproof makes a great gift for any married couple. Why not purchase it along with a copy of The Love Dare book and devotional by Stephen Kendrick? The heart and message of the film have already inspired countless couples nationwide to better their marriages and their families. If your pastor and his wife haven’t seen the film, you can’t go wrong here.
Don’t forget about the music option. Most pastors’ wives love good, Christian worship music as much as their husbands do. Find out who her favorite artists are and go hunting for their latest album. If you just want to purchase some great, contemporary worship music, you simply can’t go wrong with Hillsong’s Ultimate Worship 2 or Mercy Me’s recent CD/DVD combo release 10. Does she like southern gospel? The Bill and Gloria Gaither Best of Homecoming, Volume 2 recently hit Christian stores nationwide. Music is always an excellent choice.
One of the best Christian music choices for this Mother’s Day might just be Dove and Grammy award-winning Steven Curtis Chapman’s This Moment: Cinderella Edition. As many Christian music and longtime Chapman fans know, Steven and wife Mary Beth lost their youngest adopted daughter from China, Maria Sue Chapman, last May in a tragic home accident. The special Cinderella Edition includes all the songs from This Moment, as well as three additional tracks Steven wrote about his beautiful daughters: “Proud”, “What I’m Fighting For”, and “Beautiful Scars.” The album also contains an acoustic version of the hit song “Cinderella.” Any mom is sure to love this special album.
Finally, search the aisles and shelves your Christian bookstore for any knickknacks you think she may enjoy. Most Christian retail stores sell inspirational, framed art, throw pillows, statues/figurines, even purses and tote bags. So don’t think there’s nothing out there for that pastoral mom in your church. Take a little time, energy and effort to seek out that perfect gift to say thank you for all they do to support your pastor and his ministry. Remember, pastor’s wives are often the glue that holds the pastor and his family together. And that is certainly worthy of thank you.
“Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain. But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.”
