There have been quite a few Hollywood mothers who have passed their acting genes onto their daughters. The mother-daughter duos on this list have all had very successful separate acting careers, and in some cases, have appeared in movies together. So spend Mother’s Day watching some of the greatest mother-daughter actresses in some of their best movies:
Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson – This is the first mother-daughter pair of actresses that most people think of. Golden girl Goldie Hawn plays an unlikely mother alongside the man Kate Hudson refers to as her dad, Kurt Russell, in the film ‘Overboard’. However, I really love her role in ‘Shampoo’, where she appears alongside another daughter on this list. Kate Hudson also plays an unlikely mother in the film ‘Raising Helen’, but I consider her best movie role to be as a groupie in ‘Almost Famous’. Goldie Hawn later played a grown-up groupie alongside another mother on this list in ‘The Banger Sisters’. So both of these talented actresses have been in plenty of films that are perfect for Mother’s Day.
Laura Dern and Diane Ladd – Both of these actresses have been in some amazing movies, but they made history when they became the first mother-daughter duo to be nominated for an Oscar in the same movie. That movie was ‘Rambling Rose’, in which Laura Dern played a prostitute trying to put her old life behind her. Diane Ladd didn’t play her mother in the film, but she did become a great mother figure to her character. The two have played mother and daughter in many films, although my favorite is the bizarre ‘Wild at Heart’. You definitely have to have a very open-minded mother to watch their films together for Mother’s Day.
Janet Leigh and Jamie Lee Curtis – Do you and your mother love horror movies? Well, then you should enjoy the two films this mother-daughter duo are most famous for. Janet Leigh made horror movie history with her role in ‘Psycho’, while her daughter went on to keep audiences on the edge of their seat in ‘Halloween’. The two would later appear together in the film ‘Halloween H20: 20 Years Later’. Jamie Lee Curtis’ best mother role was alongside Lindsay Lohan in the remake of ‘Freaky Friday’, and while her mother didn’t have a great mom role like she did, if your mother is a fan of film noir, you definitely should watch her in ‘Touch of Evil’ together.
Tippi Hedren and Melanie Griffith – Tippi Hedren is most well-known for her role in Alfred Hitchcock thrillers ‘The Birds’ and ‘Marnie’, and her daughter went on to star in a very Hitchcock-esque film by director Brian De Palma, ‘Body Double’. But mothers will probably appreciate Melanie Griffith more as a ‘Working Girl’.
Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli – Judy Garland is famous mostly for playing a girl, not a mother, and daughter Liza Minnelli is at her best working in a ‘Cabaret’. Judy Garland’s beloved ‘Wizard of Oz’ would be a fun Mother’s Day movie for the whole family to enjoy, or you could watch her in the classic chick flick ‘In the Good Old Summertime’. Liza Minnelli makes a small appearance in this film, too; she plays a baby.
Vanessa Redgrave and Natasha Richardson – Sadly Vanessa Redgrave outlived her talented daughter, Natasha Richardson, but Natasha’s legacy lives on in her great body of work. The two actresses appeared in the film ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’ together, in which Natasha makes a small appearance as a flower girl. Vanessa Redgrave’s best film is undoubtedly the thriller ‘Blowup’, while her daughter plays a woman in a same-sex relationship in ‘Blow Dry’. Richardson also stars in a great mom movie that the whole family can enjoy: ‘The Parent Trap’, where she also plays Lindsay Lohan’s mother.
Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher – Debbie Reynolds is one of the luckiest actresses in Hollywood; she got to star in what many consider to be the best musical of all time, ‘Singin’ in the Rain’. Her daughter’s acting career took a very different path, as Carrie Fisher went on to become the biggest female sci-fi film icon ever as Princess Leia in the ‘Star Wars’ films. She also had roles alongside a mother and daughter on this list: Goldie Hawn in ‘Shampoo’ and Mia Farrow in ‘Hannah and her Sisters’. Debbie Reynold’s best role is probably in ‘The Unsinkable Molly Brown’, and she and her daughter share a very great honor: they’ve both done voices on ‘Family Guy’.
Blythe Danner and Gwenyth Paltrow – Blythe Danner’s at her best onstage, but I love her role as a mother in ‘Meet the Parents’ and ‘Meet the Fockers’, in which she starred alongside Ben Stiller. Daughter Gwyneth Paltrow also starred alongside Stiller as his sister in the dysfunctional family cult film ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’. The young actress has been in many great films, but her best role is probably in ultimate chick flick ‘Shakespeare in Love’.
Susan Sarandon and Eva Amurri – Eva Amurri is almost a spitting image of her mother when she was young, but her name isn’t quite as well-known as her mother’s yet. She and her mother played a mother-daughter pair alongside another mother on this list, Goldie Hawn, in ‘The Banger Sisters’, but Eva really showed that she could be just as big of a star as her mother in the film ‘Saved!’. Susan Sarandon’s body of work includes greats like ‘Thelma & Louise’, ‘Bull Durham’, and ‘Atlantic City’, but if your looking for a movie about moms for Mother’s Day, try ‘Stepmom’, in which she stars alongside Julie Roberts.
Maureen O’Sullivan and Mia Farrow – Irish actress Maureen O’Sullivan has the honor of being the lover of ‘Tarzan the Ape Man’, but she’s also starred in great classic films like ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and ‘Anna Karenina’. Daughter Mia Farrow has been in many amazing films, most of which were directed by one-time husband Woody Allen. They include ‘Hannah and Her Sisters’, which mother Maureen also starred in, ‘The Purple Rose of Cairo’, ‘Zelig’, and ‘Crimes and Misdemeanors’. Mia also has one role as a mother that is impossible to forget: that as the mother of Satan’s child in ‘Rosemary’s Baby’.
So whether you and your mother enjoy comedy, romance, horror movies, or movies that are just different, there’s sure to be some great mother-daughter movies on this list that you can enjoy together on Mother’s Day.
