The Washington DC metro area offers an array of budget-friendly restaurants. I live in the center of it all, so I’m going to share a few restaurants that are on my favorites list.
2453 18th Street, NW
the DINER, which is located in the Adams Morgan area of Washington, DC, at 2453 18th Street, NW, is a town hotspot. It sits in the heart of the area, attracting people from all walks of life; the bookworm, the tech geek, the 40+, the punk-rocker, everyone comes here for great food, eclectic atmosphere, and best of all for the budget-friendly prices. the DINER is open 24 hours, Monday through Sunday. The menu consists of the typical diner food, plus offers a full bar. Breakfast is served up anytime of day; French toast, pancakes, omelets…are a few items just to name a few. Dinner options include, burgers, fries, salads, fish, pork chops… Of course they have a variety of appetizers, drinks/sodas, and desserts. A place like this, a place where all are welcomed, there is no dress code. One of the downfalls I must mention about this area, the PARKING SUCKS! If you drive, please be mindful that you may be circling around and around for parking. You may get luck by scouring the nearby residential areas, but it’s tough. The one good thing is there are parking lots available and credit card/cash/coin machines along the main drag (18th Street), which will come in handy for those who have no silver in their pile of pennies. If you’re in the area, be sure to stop by! For more menu information, click the link or call.
Outside of the parking, I love the Adams Morgan area. When I want some down-home, common American food, this is where I end up, at the DINER. The dishes that I most frequently get are the Chicken Cheesesteak w/fries, Buffalo Chicken Tenders w/a salad, and the Spanish Omelet. I’m not too much of a drinker, but the few drinks that I’ve had there have been pretty good.
8555 Fenton Street
Silver Spring, MD
Sushi Jin is next on my list. Located in the busy downtown Silver Spring (MD) area, Sushi Jin offers a delicious menu of sushi, sashimi, teriyaki, and tempura, along with several specialty dishes and appetizers. They also offer beer and wine, but limited desserts. While most sushi restaurants offer dishes with expensive price tags, this place is pretty comparable and affordable at the same time. Sushi Jin is decorated with Japanese style décor, inviting an authentic atmosphere. There is no enforced dress code, but most dress casual, especially as the dinner crowd starts to arrive. Although Downtown Silver Spring has went through major transition, bringing many new businesses and restaurants to the area, there are plenty of parking garages available; they are free on weekends. Be sure to take your parking ticket with you, as you pay on foot before leaving the garage. Also, take advantage of the various shops in the area.
Silver Spring is one of my favorite areas and Sushi Jin is one of my preferred sushi spots! Not only are the prices affordable, but they 2 appetizers that I can’t resist, Salmon Dynamite (the sauce that’s drizzled on top is soooo good!) and Baked Mussels.
5810 Greenbelt Road
In the growing area of Greenbelt, MD, there is a restaurant that sits off to the side of the major road, Route 193, Chef’s Secret; an affordable American and Thai restaurant. This place has an extensive menu of Thai delectable soups and salads, American entrees, amazing Thai entrees, appetizers, noodles and rice dishes, and vegetarian entrees. In addition, they offer fine wines, beers, and mixed drinks; if you have room, there is a dessert selection too. Parking is no problem, as the restaurant has its own lot. Chef’s Secret is open for lunch 11a-230p (Monday-Friday) and dinner 5p-9p (Sunday-Thursday), 5p-10p (Friday and Saturday). Greenbelt is centrally located, so after your meal, you could shoot to DC, VA, or Baltimore to continue your night out on the town.
My most adored entrée at Chef’s Secret is the Seafood Lover, which is a blend of shrimp, mussels, scallops, and squid sautéed with basil leaves, garlic sauce, and Thai chili. It is a must try!!
