This was a remarkable season. There were many different emotions spent during this season. From busting your gut with the laughter over the practical jokes, to the absolute sadness and worry about the health of one of the fleet’s best captains. Here is the list of my top five episodes of season four of “Deadliest Catch”.
Episode 2 “Striking Out” – The guys from the Time Bandit decide to play a practical joke on the Cornelia Marie. Time Bandit carries a large junk truck on their boat and hijacks one of Captain Phil’s pots when they run across his string. They attach the truck to it and it was a nice surprise for Captain Phil when his Cornelia Marie crew pulled it up!
Episode “After the Catch” is memorable because the Hillstrand brothers of Time Bandit pay tribute to their late father. They are a very tight nit family and do not fight, much, but get along great. In this episode, the laughing jokesters take a time out of their comedy routine to drive us by the final resting place of their late father. They dug a hole in the side of the same mountain where he was married, and placed him in a pine box they made, and laid him to rest. They did not show all of this in the episode, but they explained it. Then they set off firecrackers (M-80s?) to let their father know they were there. It was a very touching moment.
Episode 14 “Changing Tides” – This is the episode no one wanted to hear… Captain Phil finally got checked out by the doctor and makes the call to his son, Josh, who is at the wheel. Phil will not be returning this season. (Deep sigh). On the Time Bandit, Jonathan’s son is now working the hydros and almost smashes the crew twice! Captain Keith and Mouse are arguing yet again and Keith says that Mouse is no longer his brother! They are tired of the camera crews and try to get away from them.
Episode 4 “Unsafe and Unsound” – This episode is one of the better ones for this season because on the Northwestern, Sig and Edgar take part in a challenge to see who could stay awake the longest. Sig finally gives in by falling asleep at the wheel after 47 hours, in turn Edgar cheers ” We broke the skipper!”
Episode 16 “The Final Hour” – This was the wrap up of the entire season. All of the boats making their final runs and unloading at the harbors. The Northwestern tossed the “Flaming Hook” to symbolize the end of their season. The Wizard found out the reason the port aft tank on the boat seemed “bottomless”. After unloading at St.Paul Island, Deck Boss Gary Soper found a hole in the tank that the crab were escaping from. And Jake and Josh Harris were reunited with their dad in Seattle to discuss the future of the Cornelia Marie and his fishing career.
