The New England Patriots under Coach Bill Belichick have became trade enthusiasts on NFL draft day. They seem to love to trade down and still get the players they target for their system. This article is the New England Patriots 2009 draft report card. Keep in mind you really can’t grade an NFL draft for about 3 years. However I will try to give the Patriots 2009 draft a grade here. One thing I like about the Patriots is they know the value of a 2nd round draft pick. Often you get first round talent for 2nd round price. All draft information comes from NFL.com.
Patrick Chung was drafted in the 2nd round with a pick obtained in the Matt Cassel trade with the Chiefs. Chung was one of the highest rated safeties on most draft rankings. He will replace Rodney Harrison and helps the New England Patriots 2009 draft report card.
Ron Brace a defensive tackle out of Boston College will bring a little local flavor the New England. Brace has the size and strength to become a solid nose tackle in the 3-4 defense favored by the Patriots.
Darius Butler a cornerback from Connecticut is a speedy defensive back and will help out an aging Patriot secondary. Butler will get to learn to play defense under a master in Coach Bill Belichick.
Sebastian Vollmer is a huge 6ft 7 300 pound plus offensive tackle out of Houston and will help the New England Patriots 2009 draft report card quite a bit. The Pats seem to find good players in the 2nd round and Vollmer may be a stud.
Brandon Tate a wide receiver out of North Carolina was the New England Patriots first 3rd round pick in 2009. Tate was a good kick returner and adequate wide receiver at UNC. If the Patriots use any wildcat formations in 2009 look for Tate to be involved.
Tyler McKenzie a linebacker out of South Florida may be a special teams player for a season or two. The Patriots do need linebackers in a bad way as theirs got old. Mike Vrabel was also traded to the Chiefs in the Cassel trade.
New England added another offensive lineman who can play tackle or guard in Rich Ohrnberger out of Penn State. He will make the 2009 roster but don’t look for him to start right away unless someone is injured.
George Bussey an offensive tackle from Louisville will be hard pressed to make the team but the Pats loaded up on linemen for a reason. They must have seen something in Bussey.
Jake Ingram from Hawaii is projected to be the long snapper for the Patriots. I think this was a great pick if he works out. Minimal salary for a very important if underestimated position.
Myron Pryor is like the teapot short and stout. If he makes the team it will be as a plugger type nose guard to stop the run. Myron Pryor played his college football at Kentucky.
I give a B+ on the New England Patriots 2009 NFL draft report card. They didn’t take a young quarterback who can play the position to replace Cassel. I would also have liked to see them take a running back. They did however add former Jaguar Fred Taylor to the running back mix.
Julian Edelman is a under 6ft tall quarterback from Kent State and like Tate could be used in some sort of Wildcat package. That would be the only way Edelman could make the team. He is too short to be the next Matt Cassel.
Yet another defensive tackle was added to the mix with the Patriots final draft pick Darryl Richard out of Georgia Tech. This tells me that the Patriots probably won’t try to resign Richard Seymour who is in a contract year.
