I had a dream, the kind I haven’t had since September 11, 2001. In it I was watching the news and hearing of various reports coming in about dirty bombs in LA and Philly, conventional explosions in Chicago and Dallas. Fast spreading sickness throughout the Midwest. And not being able to get in touch with my family around the country.
I woke up in a panic, not knowing if I had been dreaming or not.
I didn’t know if it was a nightmare or reality because the sad truth is that we are more open to these dangers than ever before in the past eight years. Since the days of 9/11 (and prior, because the bad guys were at war with us before we even realized it), America and Americans have been more vigilant and more aware of things going on around them. They have had to do what Europeans have had to for decades; watch for dangers right under their noses. But we have undone in one hundred days all the work that has kept us safe.
Gates has said that this thing with North Korea is “not a crisis.” He said that the Obama Administration is not worried about it since North Korea has said and done these things before without anything coming of it.
Yes, North Korea has renounced the armistice of 1953 in the past. And they have conducted nuclear tests and conducted missle tests. And even had harsh words for the US and South Korea. But the difference is that they are doing all of these things and more now. They say they are doing it in “self defense,” that they have a limit to their patience when responding to UN sanctions.
And they are doing it during a time when we have shown the world weakness in the face of such saber rattling. The British government showed such weakness when dealing with a Germany who was rearming in the 1930’s. And we all know how well that turned out.
The Press releases for the Homeland Security Department are surprisingly quiet on the North Korea issue. Seems to me that they would at the very least take the administration’s stance and issue a statement rebuking any threat assesment by other folks.
The President himself released a ridiculous statement about North Korea’s nuclear and missle tests. On May 25th, 2009, the White House released the President’s response statement. In it, Obama said “By acting in blatant defiance of the United Nations Security Council, North Korea is directly and recklessly challenging the international community. North Korea’s behavior increases tensions and undermines stability in Northeast Asia. Such provocations will only serve to deepen North Korea’s isolation. It will not find international acceptance unless it abandons its pursuit of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery.”
I ask you, can he be serious? Do you really think it is international acceptance that North Korea is looking for? Do you think Kim Jung-Il just wants some friends?
Oh come on now, you can’t be that incredibly stupid! And to think that China is just sitting there saying, ‘Oh how horrible, we must work together with the United States and the West (our hated enemies) to stop this aggressor (who actually was backed by us and still follows our beliefs more closely that the rest of the world).’
And even though I think Russia may not be too thrilled by a nuclear armed North Korea, it’s leaders certainly would love to see the US attacked on yet another front. Even though the “National Terror Alert” website states that Russia is concerned that the problems with N. Korea could “descend into nuclear war,” are they concerned for the international community or just for their own national security. (Because Kim Jong-il is nuts!)
Let us realize how we got to this point with Korea (and Iran and the upsurge in terrorist violence worldwide). We elected a President who has shown massive weakness when dealing with international issues. He just wants to be friends with everyone (“Can’t we all just get along?!”) Some people like Ahmadinejad and Kim Jong-il are just crazy. They are meglomaniacal lunatics. You can’t just admonish them and think they’ll say ‘oh gee, we’re sorry, we’ll be good.’
A really good article to read is Jeff Emanuel’s peice on the CBS News website.
When will we (the American people) realize that the stands taken by this administration truly are weakening us? Cheney (not my most fav person) is right. Obama has taken step after step that has weakened us and opened us up to all this and more. Powell, Gibbs, Napolitano and Gates are all taking the line politic and, in essence, offering us up on a plate to those who wish us harm. And this is not just my opinion. There are articles in the Wall Street Journal that carry concerns of our national security, recent upswings in violence in countries we need as allies for our own national security issues and loss of secure footings with other allies we need.
It is high to to get off the anger of lossing an election, the euphoria of winning and election and get back to doing what is right for America and our future generations. I for one do not want to wake up and find that my nightmares are not just there when I sleep.
