The Chris Brown-Rihanna scandal has touched almost everyone who has a strong opinion on domestic violence. Feminists have turned Rihanna into public enemy number one, almost as much as Brown, with the reports that Rihanna was taking Brown back. But a story isn’t truly big, and Rihanna isn’t truly a target for criticism, until Oprah gets into the mix. Oprah did just that on Friday, with more to come this week.
On Oprah’s live Friday panel show, Oprah talked publicly about Rihanna’s action for the first time on her program. Like many, Oprah was critical about Rihanna going back to Brown, and had a message for her. She warned Rihanna that Brown “will hit you again” as many fear.
Oprah stressed that “love doesn’t hurt” and will spend more time on the subject to prove it. On March 12, Oprah will devote an entire show to the issue of domestic violence among teens, and what the Brown-Rihanna story has done to and for the topic.
For all the hype Brown and Rihanna had as music stars, and all that they have faced since the scandal broke out, it is hard to remember that they are still young. Rihanna is 21 now, with Brown just 19. This may be why Oprah is putting the domestic violence spotlight on teenagers and the young for this show.
Whenever Oprah gets involved in something, whether it is discussion on a subject, a book, Barack Obama, or anything else, then the story has really arrived. This story had already taken up a lot of air time, but only Oprah can put it into the mainstream and out of the gossip and crime report pages.
Brown’s alleged beating of Rihanna, the gruesome details exposed in the affidavit, the gossip reports about Rihanna still wanting Brown back, and rumors ranging from her being pregnant to the couple being married, have made it a sordid scandal.
People hoped that it would shed a light on domestic violence, until Rihanna decided to take Brown back. Now, perhaps their last hope for anything positive and illuminating to come from it, instead of something ugly, falls to Oprah as always.
While Oprah prepares for Thursday’s show on the subject, Brown and Rihanna are waiting for the next step as to legal proceedings. Brown is charged with two felonies, but he is out on bail, and a plea deal may eventually be made.
