Pastor Fred Winters was shot and killed during a church service in Maryville Illinois on Sunday March 8th. He is mourned by many people. This man was an intelligent, kind, servant of God. He was a husband and father to two girls. He had no enemies. So what made this man who did not know Fred shoot him? I have been told that lime disease may be to blame. Witnesses say that the man acted crazy, or “possessed” that same morning, and his calendar which was found after the shooting said “Death Day” on March 8th. Before you can decide if lime disease is to blame, you must first understand what it is.
Lime disease is caused by a microscopic organism hat live inside of ticks. People are infected through tick bites. Many times, people do not notice the bite that has caused them to become infected.
About 2 days after being bitten, you will experience severe headache, a high fever, and severe muscle aches and weakness. Many people will develop a rash. If the disease is left untreated, it can cause chills, shaking, abdominal pain, nausea, back stiffness, and mental confusion.
Although lime disease does cause mental confusion, I do not believe that it could cause one human to plan the murder of other humans. So, I have decided maybe, the man was suffering from schizophrenia. Let’s look at those symptoms.
1 vague speech
2 unable to follow simple conversation
3 disconnected remarks
4 blank looks
5 hearing voices
7 devoid of feeling
Now, this seems to fit a little better. Witnesses say that man was acting ‘possessed’, he was making strange remarks, yelling and cursing at ‘no one’. He was talking to himself. Was he hearing voices? Only he knows, the man had to be devoid of all feeling to be able to kill a man of God in front of his congregation.
Personally, I wonder if the man was not psychotic. A person who is psychotic has lost contact with reality and is either occasionally or constantly incapable of rational behavior. However, could a person who is psychotic, spend time to plot murders? To prepare themselves and write a last testament? Others do believe the man was possessed. This is a religious belief, referred to in the Bible. I feel, we must entertain this idea because Pastor Fred was a man of God. Many times, those who are reported to be possessed, have the characteristics of many mental disorders all wrapped up in one person. They can be very violent toward someone who is doing the will of God. In the Bible, Jesus made demons flee from people, but can possession still be happening today? The answer is YES!
I feel that we will never know why Pastor Winters was murdered and all we can do is learn from this. Pastor Winters was doing what he felt was right and what made him happy. What kind of a society do we live in where such a good person is murdered for absolutely no reason. God help this country.
