The next game in the PixelJunk series finally has a name. PixelJunk Shooter will be released on the Playstation Network of the Playstation 3.
The PixelJunk series is a collaboration project between Q-Games and Sony Computer Entertainment. The first series is composed of five completely original 2D games done in 1080p high-definition. The first game in the series, PixelJunk Racers, was released on September 13th, 2007. The racing title got mixed reactions and little recognition from the gaming community.
Despite the dubious debut, Q-Games decided to stick with their promising series. They got the breakout hit they needed with PixelJunk Monsters, which was released on January 24, 2008. The tower defense title spearheaded the Playstation Network, which was still in its infant stages at that point.
It wouldn’t take long for Q-Games to have another breakout hit on their hands. PixelJunk Eden was released later in the same year on July 31. The Playstation Network exclusive titles is the most innovative and original project yet from the underrated developer. The unique visual and soundtrack mesh well with the one-of-a-kind platforming gameplay.
After two successful games in a row, fans and critics couldn’t wait for the next game in the PixelJunk series of downloadable games. Unfortunately, they would need to wait longer than usual. The PixelJunk games are notoriously known to have quick development times. However, PixelJunk Monsters, which was supposed to be the next game in the series, got pushed back to a later date. As a result, the next PixelJunk game wouldn’t be announced until 2009.
On April 29 of this year, Q-Games finally announced the new PixelJunk game. However, the title has no name. Instead, they decided to hold a naming contest running until May 11th for project PixelJunk 1-4.
PixelJunk 1-4 gives contestant plenty of freedom as the Playstation Network downloadable game is as unique as a game can be. Like other games in the series, the new game features 2D high-definition visuals. PixelJunk 1-4 uses a watercolor tone, however. Gameplay is based around a top-down shooting game where you need to rescue helpless creatures from a dangerous cave system filled with hazards and enemies. To do so you must use a simple elemental system involving rock, lava and water in order to access new areas.
Because of that, Q-Games saw many entries for PixelJunk Elements. However, they decided to go with the much less exciting PixelJunk Shooter in the end.
No release date has been announced for PixelJunk Shooter on the Playstation Store of the Playstation 3 but you can expect this exciting Playstation Network title to be released before the end of 2009.
