Preparing your toddler for kindergarten is a very simple thing to do. There are small things you can do to get him or her ready. Today more and more people are teaching their children at a younger age. Some people oppose the idea of teaching a toddler at too young of an age, but there are others who encourage it. Those that disagree feel that by cramming your child with too much information too soon is not allowing the child to experience fun times. This argument is complete nonsense. Your toddler can have fun, play, be a kid, and learn all at the same time.
The first thing you can do to prepare your toddler for kindergarten is to read to them every single day. Studies show that children whose parents read to them do a lot better in school. This is a simple task that only takes ten minutes of your time.
Once your toddler becomes a one year old, you can begin to teach them their ABCs by singing it to them every day. Children catch on quickly. You can teach them their numbers up to twenty just to get started. Some parents may think that they are not qualified to teach their toddler anything beyond the ABCs and 123s but they are wrong. Once your little darling can sing the ABCs back to you, it is time to teach them letter recognition. You do not need any fancy school supplies; all you need is a black magic marker and some index cards. On each index card write an upper case and the lower case letter.
First you should go over the index cards with your toddler everyday for 15 minutes in order. Once you know that your toddler can recognize the letters on their own, take them out of order. This tests the toddler to see if he or she truly knows the alphabet. The same can be done for numbers.
Once your toddler has perfected this method, it is time to teach your toddler the sounds that each letter makes. You can use the same index cards for this. Have your toddler repeat the sounds three times in a row before you move on to the next sound. You can do this activity for 15 minutes per day as well.
Once your child turns three, you can begin teaching them how to read small words like cat, hit, pen, and many more. Slowly teach them to read by having them read small word from out of a Dr. Seuss book. The other thing you will need is a good phonics book. A phonics book teaches more complex sounds like blends, and ending sounds. At this age you can also teach him simple adding and subtraction. Don’t worry this isn’t too much for your toddler to handle. You have to make the experience fun. You can teach him to add and subtract simple numbers by using car toys or jelly beans.
Another thing you can do to prepare your toddler for kindergarten is to teach them how to write the alphabet when he turns three years old. Start your child off with tracing letters and numbers. Then they can try to write them on their own. Teach them to write their name as well.
So you see it doesn’t take fancy teaching aides to prepare your toddler for kindergarten. You just have to reinforce what you teach them every day. To prepare your toddler for kindergarten you should teach them the following: to recite the alphabet and numbers, letter sounds, letter and number recognition, simple adding and subtraction, simple reading, and writing.
