I’ve seen some retro hairstyles this year that really surprised me. After some of the over-the-top hairstyles of the past few years, you wouldn’t think that a hairstyle could be shocking anymore. The shock now, comes not from spikes, pink hair, or even green and black hair. The retro hairstyles seen in movies and on celebrities are making a trendy little comeback.
Welcome back the favorite hairstyles of iconic Hollywood celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot.
Retro Hairstyles – Loose Pull Away
Gwenyth Paltro and Cate Blanchett don’t wear the loose pull away from the face in quite the same poufy style as Brigitte Bardot, but clearly their hairstyles are similar. In a casual look, with straightened hair the women have been seen with their hair pulled back as though it is carelessly pinned. This is far from a careless look. Long straight hair can be pulled away from the face while wearing long curls in back, or piling up the back to create a casual up-do. Either way, we’ve seen this look before and it is reminiscent of Brigitte Bardot.
Retro Hairstyles – Marilyn Monroe’s perfect, glam curls
Katherine Heigl wore a look that loosely resembled the classic curls of Marilyn Monroe. Monroe’s glam curls have been showing up as much, if not more, than any retro hairstyle among celebrities. Heigl stopped short of finger waves to complete the style, but it was reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe. Kelly Pickler has been the critics’ choice for a hairstyle that takes on the Monroe, glam curl look. This hairstyle is not difficult to achieve with a large roller brush, large barrel curling iron, and a high gloss finishing spray.
Retro Hairstyles – Turn up the Volume
Farrah Fawcett’s long bouncy curls became synonymous with her name. We’ve lived through a straight hair craze, and it may be time to pump up the volume. Marion Cottilard wore curls on the red carpet at the Oscars. Jessica Simpson has also pumped up the volume. Reminiscent of by-gone African-American hairstyles, Tamika Ray wore a pumped up hairstyle, with lots of curl, to the Oscars.
Retro Hairstyles- Beatles, British Bowl Bob and Bangs
This isn’t an insult to the British. I rather think it is a tribute to pop hairstyles of the 60’s, which were at the time considered outlandish. This cut allows hair of mid-length to create an oval frame of the face. Bangs are long and the hair cut is tapered toward the front. It is a hairstyle that takes minimum work, although it may single you out as a Beatle fan.
Diablo Cody’s 2009 red-carpet hairstyle for the Oscars came close to the Beatle Bob, but was a little longer in back. Cody was unabashed with her dark bob that contrasted many of the more glam styles on the red carpet.
