Continuing on with my addiction of Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch, I recently bought Season 3 on DVD. This season truly can’t be beaten as old rivals Captain Sig Hansen and Captain Phil Harris continue to pit themselves against each other in an effort to get the most loaded pots and catch the most crabs. In season 3, we also meet Blake Painter, a rookie Captain, which makes the rivalry of the commercial fisherman even more thrilling. In fact, Deadliest Catch Season 3 is a must-buy on DVD if you’ve ever watched this series or think you ever should, and here’s why.
11 Episodes of Deadliest Catch Season 3 – There’s 11 thrilling episodes of Deadliest Catch on the season 3 DVD. I think season 3 is one of the best seasons of the show, simply because of the Cheating Death episode, when the crew of the Time Bandit save a man from another boat who’s swept overboard by a humongous wave. This episode is singularly poignant because we find out that, 10 years before, a similar incident happened and at that time the Hillstrand brothers weren’t able to save the man.
In these 11 episodes, we also see Captain Phil’s frustrations with his idiot sons (shopaholics anonymous or idiots r us seems like a fitting place for these two and not on board a crab boat), and Blake Painter’s rookie season. Blake starts off the season badly in episode 1, A Tragic Beginning, by hiring pretty much nobody but his friends, all of whom have never fished for King Crab before. Then, even though he was confident before they started out, he spends his first few hours out at sea with no idea where to put his pots. Finally, he starts to radio other boats asking them for advice on where to place his pots, irritating every other captain in the process. A Tragic Beginning ends with the news that the Ocean Challenger has gone down and only one of the four men on board has been found alive. These episodes and nine more are on the Deadliest Catch Season 3 DVD and, let me tell you, even if you’ve seen these shows before, the excitement seems just as new the second time around.
The Relationships on Deadliest Catch Season 3 DVD – I think Season 3 is the best Deadliest Catch season when it comes to the relationships on board the boats. By now, we’re already familiar with Captain Sig Hansen and Captain Phil Harris, but their somewhat friendly rival develops even more in this season. Captain Phil’s complete frustrations with his sons are also funny to watch even if, at the same time, the viewer is thinking “What a couple of idiots!” It’s actually a fascinating study in social culture that Captain Phil’s two sons are well aware they’re on camera yet still act like fools. Is it ‘playing to the camera’ or are they really this dumb? Maybe we’ll never know, but it’s fun to speculate and, with season 3’s DVD set, you can watch it over and over again.
Extras on Deadliest Catch Season 3 DVD – I always like DVD sets because they usually come with extras and Deadliest Catch Season 3 DVD set is no exception. It includes bonus behind-the-scenes-footage on how difficult and dangerous it actually is to film this series. Don’t forget, the cameraman and other members of the film crew are also on these boats so, if there’s any trouble and a boat is in danger, the film crew is in the same danger the boat crew is in. There’ve been several ‘close calls’ since Discovery Channel started to film the Deadliest Catch, a couple of which are mentioned on the behind-the-scenes footage.
The Deadliest Catch Season 3 DVD boxed set has 3 DVDs and runs for 480 minutes and, at under 20 bucks, that’s a great deal. If you love Deadliest Catch, you’ll really enjoy Season 3 on DVD and, don’t forget, if you’re looking for a gift for a dad, brother, boyfriend or husband (or for a girl like me who just loves manly men and danger), Deadliest Catch Season 3 on DVD is the perfect gift.
