I am a big fan of Run’s House. However, the Monday, June 22, 2009 (last night) got me thinking. Earlier this year, Rev. Run’s son, Joseph Simmons Jr. a.k.a JoJo got in trouble with the law. He was arrested for the possession of the illegal drug, marijuana. I had seen the sneak peaks and knew they were going to talk about. However, last night it just didn’t seem right for them to talk about it.
At first, I thought maybe it was because it aired directly after Jon and Kate made their big announcement. And two serious subjects were just a bit much to handle back to back. However, I watched it again this morning and it still did not seem like the right place to air that.
For those of you who have never seen Run’s House, the show follows rap pioneer/legend Joseph “Run” Simmons of RunDMC fame and his family. His family includes: wife Justine, daughters Vanessa, Angela and Miley, sons Daniel (Diggy), Russell II (Russy) and Joseph Jr. (JoJo), and Run’s brother the legendary and iconic Russell Simmons. The show is very much a show for family. In one of their earlier seasons they did a very serious show about loosing their newborn daughter shortly after her birth.
Quick recap of the Monday, June 22, 2009 show: The show started out like all of the other shows. Just the family in their everyday “fabulous” life. Diggy and Russy began arguing about why Russy read so much. Russy saying, “it (reading) is like TV in your mind.” Then they all went to bed with Justine and Run having their daily bed talk. The lights went off and the camera showed the outside of the Simmons’ large New Jersey home.
Then the Simmons receive a call. It is their son, JoJo. The next day, Diggy and Russy come into the kitchen and Justine talks to them about what occurred. Run bails JoJo out of jail. Vanessa and Angela fly in from their Los Angeles home. JoJo then receives a talk from Vanessa, Angela, Rev. Run, Justine, and Uncle Russell (in no specific order). JoJo then talked to Diggy and Russy about it. Vanessa and Angela also explained the situation more to Diggy and Russy.
Also during the show, Rev. reveals that he smoked the stuff before. Actually Mr. Russell Simmons said, “you were a chimney.” Then Rev Run admitted he smoked.
Due to the fact that Run’s House is a family show, I, personally, believe they shouldn’t have talked about this drug use. I think it was great that the whole family talked to JoJo about his problem. However, parents should have the choice to talk to their kids about the subject or not–hopefully they will. A lot of parents that I have talked to didn’t watch last night’s show, but their kids did. Most of the parents said that they don’t mind their kids watching shows like Run’s House because they are family oriented. However, they had concerns when they learned last night’s show was centered around JoJo’s trouble with the law.
Here’s your chance to way in. Should family oriented shows like Run’s House talk about serious subjects such as: drugs?
