Doing your daily exercise and workout routines is very much enjoyable and will lead you to a healthier body. But then, there is one thing that some people tend to overlook while working out and that is to observe safety precautions. Here are some safety tips that you could do while working out to avoid accidents and untoward incidents.
First and foremost, always make sure you have enough room to move around. This is especially true if you are doing aerobics or cardio workouts. You often need to jump around, run, move from side to side and you really need ample space to maximize your workout. Doing it in confined spaces could lead to injuries. Move tables and chairs away for the meantime and just bring them back after you are finished.
One of the funniest, but serious, safety precautions I observe when working out is to wear closed shoes. This is really true especially if you’re doing weight training. Wearing slippers/flip flops while working with barbells and dumbbells isn’t really safe. What if your 30-pound dumbbell falls on your foot? You’d be injured and your stability will be compromised. So wear rubber shoes as much as possible.
Another thing to consider would be your machine. Before trying out any machine, ask the trainers and the gym staff how it works. And from then on, do it properly. This is very common in lat pull downs and leg machines. Letting go of the machines abruptly may lead to accidents. If you plan to use one at home, read the directions carefully and for crying out loud ask if you don’t know how to use it yet.
The next safety tip is to always seek help if you plan to lift heavy weights. Don’t try to impress people by doing 200+ pounds on the bench press alone. It won’t be impressive to see your chest get pounded by the barbell. It’s one of the most dangerous gym injuries as it could stop your breathing or even your heart. So always ask for someone to spot for you.
But if you have equipments at home, do not try to do it yourself especially if you know there isn’t anyone who can help you incase the barbell slips (or any machine for that matter). Do the maximum weight you can handle safely.
Don’t do something you can’t. Yes, pushing yourself hard will give you great results but don’t push beyond your limit too much. We have our own body limits so always seek your doctor’s advice when it comes to working out. Have a stress test to gauge your limitations and see if you’re fit to do your workout. The bottom line is, don’t overdo it.
Working out is really fun but it would be more fun if you have less worries on your mind. These basic safety precautions should always be observed to avoid injuries. Workout safely guys.
