The 2009 AIDS Walk will take place on July 19, 2009, in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California. July is usually a very pleasant month in San Francisco but it is always advisable to bring a light jacket in case it gets chilly as it often does in the city.
The AIDS Walk is scheduled to start at 10:30 am but rarely starts exactly on time due to long-winded politicians who speak at the start line. It is a 10-kilometer (6.2 mile) event that takes place up and down the streets in gorgeous Golden Gate Park.
The walk is fairly easy if you are in decent physical shape. If you’re overweight or if you don’t get much exercise, just remember to take it slow and stop for frequent rests. This event is not a contest but an opportunity to raise money for a good cause. Many people just come to socialize, meet new people and have a good time.
The money raised goes toward services provided by the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, which benefits different organizations throughout San Francisco and the Bay Area. Many friends and family members of those who are walking in this event have died from AIDS so be extra sensitive about how serious this event is to the people in attendance. Raise money by way of pledges or donations.
Take Public Transit
Whatever you do, do not drive your car to Golden Gate Park. Take public transit if you can. The Bay Area Rabid Transit (BART) trains run throughout the greater Bay Area and they will probably have extra trains that day. BART does not go to Golden Gate Park but they can take you to the city where you can then take the MUNI buses or light-rail trains. Taxis will also be plentiful. Try to arrange a carpool if you must go by car.
What to Bring
Make sure you bring a backpack that you can carry around during the 2-3 hour walk. Also bring a light jacket, sunscreen, a hat, some food, and plenty of water. Note that it can get very crowed along the track so bring a very positive attitude and leave the grumpiness at home. This walk is for a very good cause.
