As you are walking through the grocery store you pass by generic brands on every, you look at them yet continue to stick to your customary and more expensive brand names even though you know you could save money by switching to generic. You may have thought about switching to save money but you just have not gotten up the nerve because you are comfortable with your brand and fear that a generic brand will be inferior as it may have been in the past. So what do you do in this economic crisis knowing that you need to; do you continue to be stubborn and committed to your name brand or do you make the switch to generic in order to save money?
Over the past year I have been forced to give up my favorite name brands in search of generics that have and will continue to save me money. The following is a review of 10 common household products that you may want to consider changing from buying brand names to buying generic in order to save money. Included in the list I will tell you any notes I have about the products that I selected or reviewed along with the expected cost savings per week for a family of 4. Use my review and you can skip the testing and get an honest review before you make the switch to save money buying generics.
Old product: Tide Liquid
New product: Gain Powder
Average savings $4-6
Gain is just as good as tide if not better and I feel my clothes smell fresher longer with gain and I save money. I attempted to save money by trying Surf which was $1 less than gain and I immediately went back to gain. If you have never used powder, neither had I, try it!
Old Product: Glad Force flex
New product: Wal-mart Generic
Average savings $2-3
I actually had to email glad because at least twice I purchased bags that easily separated at the drawstring which was making a mess and not helping me save money. They did send me coupons for free ones but it just kept happening. I know buy Wal-mart generic and am satisfied, they are not force flex so do not overfill but they do not break at the seam either. I have tried other generics and these are the only ones that work well enough to end up helping me save money.
I have tried angel soft, Scott and numerous others but no toilet tissue in attempts to save money and none compare to Charmin. Charmin is always soft and holds up better than any other. I used the bathroom more than most and I will never buy less than Charmin, some things you just can’t buy generic even though you are needing to save money.
Old product: Bounty or Brawny
New product: Oasis (Wal-Mart Generic)
Average Savings: $2-4
Just like toilet paper I do not like to skimp on paper towels so when I tried generics to save money, I always went back to my name brands due to thickness and durability. I have now found Oasis and love them!
Old product : Cascade
New product: Palmolive ECO
This product cleans better than any other, it’s ECO friendly and it helps me save money. I have tried many others including the expensive cascade complete and I believe this Palmolive is superior to any other.
Old product: Palmolive
New product: Ajax
Average savings: $2-4
This product works great and I will continue to save money using it.
Oil of Olay/Caress/Dove (All work great)
I have tried numerous generics and lesser expensive brands like ivory but have found that all leave my skin to dry. There are some items, especially skin care items that can not be substituted now matter how badly I need to save money.
Old product: Huggies/Pampers
New product: Parents Choice (Wal-mart Generic)
Average savings: $5 per 30 pack (1.5 pack per week so $7.5 savings)
I have tried every brand out there, LUVS is ok, the other generics all leak. Parents Choice is perfect even for sensitive skin and has a great price to help you save money!
Huggies Brand only for those who are trying to save money and those who don’t care.
I have tried numerous brands and Huggies brand wipes are far superior to the rest.
Pampers are too thin/Parents choice are too hard & rough
Make the Switch
Make the switch and you will enjoy an average savings of $20 per week! Not a bad way to save money just by switching to products that are just as good if not better! Look for more generic product reviews soon!
