Marijuana has been around since the 1600’s, unfortunately the usefulness of the herb has slowly over the years turned from something good to bad, due to those who abuse it’s natural powers.
I personally cannot bash marijuana use in moderation. I had a very good relationship with marijuana when I was a teenager. Didn’t abuse it, didn’t sell it, didn’t share it and didn’t smoke it every chance I had. I just enjoyed it, period.
Things however, have changed drastically from the 80’s to now. You no longer smoke a joint, it’s a blunt. A nickel bag is only for one use now. Marijuana is wrapped in cigar paper instead of cigarette paper, therefore, getting this ridiculous looking cigar type joint. Instead of one person smoking it, you have a circle of friends taking turns. Kids nowadays lace their “blunts” with whatever else gets them a better high, cocaine being one of the most used.
It’s no longer fun to smoke marijuana. All it’s about is how often and how high someone can get. Marijuana has turned into a dangerous drug. I never thought that, until one of my own became so addicted to it that it changed her completely. Finally, however after almost 5 years, she is finally getting back to be herself.
Don’t let it happen to your kids, learn the basic signs of marijuana use now.
Pay attention to objects in your teenagers room. Items like cigars, cigarette papers, cans with holes on the side, pipes, bongs, small baggies, eye drops, stash of snacks, and variety of air fresheners. All these items are signs that your child is using marijuana.
If your teenager is sleeping on every chance that he/she gets, chances are marijuana has something to do with it. Now I am not talking about taking a nap every so often. I am talking about sleeping for hours on end after they have come home from being with friends or being out of the house.
Hunger is a major sign of smoking marijuana. Better known as the “munchies”, most of those who smoke or who have smoked marijuana know exactly what I am talking about. Raiding the refrigerator, eating an over abundance of a certain kind of food, and mixing foods you would never think of mixing if you were in your normal sense.
Dry mouth, better known as “cotton mouth” is another key sign of smoking marijuana. This happens after you have smoked and no matter how much you drink, your thirst is never quenched..
When you smoke marijuana one of the first signs is squinting eyes. This means that your eyes begin to shut to the point where they are almost closed. In some people their eyes do turn red, that is what the eye drops are usually for.
Teenagers who begin smoking marijuana usually have a different attitude after they have done it a few times. Their attitude is never a good one, but a sarcastic, obnoxious, distant one. It’s starts out as them ignoring you, and ends up with them being seriously sarcastic and mouthy. Their friends begin to change, they begin to distant themselves from anyone they use to know including family members. Their school grades and attendance are non existent, stealing is possible to support their habit, and smoking becomes their number one priority.
Let me say this to all you parents out there who think that their child would never smoke marijuana. Do not kid yourself! Your child could be a straight A student who never has even once gotten into trouble, until that one person convinces them to take a hit. After that, it is all down hill from there. Pay attention to changes in your teenager. Pay attention to their friends, their actions, their moods, just pay attention. Do not think that it cannot happen to you, cause, I thought that way and boy was I in for a ride.
Once you realize that there is something going on, the first thing to remember is not to accuse them. Sit them down and talk to them like young adults. Do not treat them, as though they do not understand, they understand a lot more than you think. Once you have pin pointed the problem, stop the problem immediately or try to. If you cannot do it, yourself, there are plenty of resources out there to help you.
