As if there was ever any doubt, this is Kaiju… This time I’m opening your mind to the real reasons for the civil war. Was it a crucial war that shaped the future of our nation? Oh yes, it certainly was. Was it a noble cause? Not quite as noble as you’d think.
Its become popular to think of the main cause of the Civil War as freeing the slaves. This is only partly true. The battles raged over one main issue- slavery. However, freedom wasn’t at the center of it. Slavery was a practice recognized by the government as a source of physical labor justified by its economic effect. The government condoned this practice! It was a major part of America’s economy at the time and would have continued were it not for a series of events that would lead to the Civil War.
. The central cause of this war was the secession of the Southern states from the union. The newly formed confederate states allied together and separated from the United States in order to avoid possible slavery reforms. It was this action that sparked the first flames of war. A call to arms came forth because of the refusal of the south to compromise over the problems it had with the union. The results of the separation were drastic and would be remembered in mixed feelings of joy and hatred. The abolishment of slavery.
The union, despite the fact that the south had seceded, put a ban on slavery in confederate states. According to Abraham Lincoln, from Tennessee and below, all who left the union were now illegally keeping slaves. This was done for three reasons, the first being out of moral obligation. Slavery was widely seen as a sinful, barbaric practice. Yet this was also the weakest of the three. The second reason behind it was to weaken the south. Thanks to its thriving slave-oriented economy, the south was considerably wealthier than the north at the time. The north wouldn’t stand a chance against its richer southern enemy if it didn’t. The final reason for Lincoln’s action was a strategic maneuver. He knew the south wouldn’t comply and therefore he’d have a due cause for war- as well as attracting a greater following in sweeping down on the south. It would take years of bloodshed to reach a final standpoint on the troubles at hand. The union reclaimed the southern states and fully erased slavery as an issue. With the dark practice abolished, the Civil War was put behind them.
The Civil War was caused initially by the separation of states. Ironically, it was ended by the reuniting of the states. The destruction of slavery was the result of the confederate’s creation. The very thing they sought to preserve through secession was abolished by their actions. Irony is a cruel mistress who seeks to make us laugh at our own failure, and yet we do not hear the laughter of those who fought in the Civil War. Only tears can penetrate the souls of those who witnessed the violence of that time. May time wash away the blood and sins of our nation… Strange creature, traitor to the world- this has been Kaiju.
