Mothers are so special in our lives – – they are our biggest champion, our most loyal advocate and our most faithful fan. Mothers give so much to us during the year and we choose to celebrate their extraordinary sacrifices only one day a year. This is why I believe that we should make Mother’s Day so very special for our mothers. When I became a mother myself, it is only then that I realized the sacrifice, joy and, yes sometimes, heartache that my own mother experienced while nurturing me and teaching me to become the woman that I am today. There are many ways to say ‘thank you’ to your mother’s this year on Mother’s Day but below are some unique gift ideas that will give her something more precious than a gift – – time spent with the child that she loves so very much.
I will begin with something my friend is doing for her mother this year because I think this is so wonderful (her mother cried when they told her). She has one sister and two brothers so this year they decided to forego the Mother’s Day dinner with in-laws and grandchildren. They are taking their mother away for the weekend to a log cabin. They are spending the night on Saturday, cooking dinner together with their mother and spending time talking and sharing memories. It will be just the five of them for the entire weekend playing board games, laughing and looking through pictures and memories. The two girls have made a scrapbook of pictures, keepsakes and handwritten letters to their mother sharing with her how much she has meant to them. I know that this very special time will mean so much more to my friend’s mother and I am so happy they are doing this for her.
What I am doing is a little different but along the same lines as spending time with my mother. Most mothers do not take the time to pamper themselves very much and a spa package is a great way to treat them to some well-deserved pampering. However, the thing is, my mother is always wanting to share time with me and we rarely get to enjoy the time we did before I became a mother myself – – laughing, talking and just being together. Therefore, I not only made a reservation at the spa for her but I made one for myself. We are doing an entire spa package together and then going out to dinner that evening before attending a play. I was careful to schedule spa treatments that we could enjoy together (and I did treat her to a special massage just for her) and choose a restaurant where we can take our time to talk and enjoy our dinner. I am sure that I will receive just as much joy from giving this gift, as my mother will from receiving it.
If you do not live near your mother or you are unable to spend time with her yourself, try to arrange a gift that will include her sisters or possible her friends. Think about the things you enjoy and how much more fun you have when you are enjoying them with your friends. Your mother is the same – – she enjoys pampering but it is much more fun when you are sharing it with a girlfriend. So go ahead and schedule that spa treatment or special dinner but include her friends. Make it a special day for them all so they can laugh and be impractical without thinking they can be cleaning the house, taking care of their grandchildren or spending this money on their children. Believe me, this will be greatly appreciated and I know this – – my husband did this for me last year on Mother’s Day. He arranged my best friend and me to go out of town for the weekend and to enjoy a shopping trip. We stayed up late, ordered room service, laughed and acted silly the entire weekend. It was so much fun just to relax and not worry about who was picking up the kids from soccer practice, what was for dinner and that load of laundry that had to be dried.
Whatever you do for your mother this Mother’s Day, remember that much more than a gift you can purchase in the store she wants to be with you because you are the reason this day is special for her and she wants nothing more than to spend it with you.
