In the Poconos, the landscape is changing as the warm weather stimulates the Judas trees, the Dogwoods, the Shad-blow, the Magnolia, Quince, the Azaleas, and other flowering trees and shrubs. It’s enough to put anyone in a romantic frame of mind. Springtime is a favorite time for weddings and, for people living within a radius of 100 miles, Stroudsmoor would be my strong recommendation for a wedding site.
I visit the place fairly often because we are “members” of a sort and use their small gym, the indoor swimming pool and hot tub, especially in winter. We inevitably encounter the frequent wedding party ceremonies, dinners, and festivities. There are several reasons why Stroudsmoor is a great place for a wedding.
The stress of getting to a wedding in metro areas can be considerable, yet such annoyances are minimal at Stroudsmoor. Stroudsmoor is about 85 miles from New York City and about 95 miles from Philadelphia. Stroudsmoor features a country atmosphere but yet is not far from major population centers of Philadelphia, New York, and the less populated but sprawling Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. The trouble with marriages held in population centers it that one must compete with everything else going on-from parking spaces to human spaces. Stroudsmoor, on the other hand, is located on a ridge of a mountain above towns to the north east and a rural valley to the southwest. There is plenty of parking, plenty of space altogether, and pretty views.
Pocono weather is changeable-the Stroudsmoor has a way of coping with an outdoor wedding regardless of the weather. Stroudsmoor conducts outdoor wedding ceremonies without those ridiculous circus-style wedding tents. There’s a variety of building choices for wedding luncheons or dinners, a covered esplanade near a pretty-manmade waterfall and a small pond stocked with coy. The covered walkway leads to an outdoor pavilion on one end and a regular “hall” on the other, providing shelter when needed, and a beautiful outdoor scene ideal for photographs.
We’ve had lunch at Stroudsmoor and dinners, too. Stroudmoor is well known for its Tapas. We’ve dined at Stroudsmoor many times and I can recommend the food. Tapas is the Spanish name for what the Italians call “antipasto” and the Chinese call “dim sum,” but when ordering the Tapas at Stroudsmoor, one can expect a great deal more than what the French call “hors d’oeuvres.” Tapas at Stroudsmoor can entail hearty fare like salmon, pasta, or London broil as well as artichoke and other salads, a variety of crudités, shrimp, oysters, pepperoncini, olives, cheeses, and generally a culinary surprise or two. I forgot to mention the great soups-including Italian Wedding Soup. If there is a culinary bias which leans toward Italian food, that may be because the owners are Italian and take great pains to provide a dining experience with old world elegance and taste. While the views from the Tapas dining room is not exceptional, the food and inside atmosphere are; the pleasant atmosphere is enhanced by personable and unobtrusive servers who dress like country maids and misters.
If the views from the Tapas dining room are not spectacular, the views from other locations around Stroudsmoor are hard to beat. One vast wedding hall is situated at the edge of a mountain overlooking a pretty and sparsely populated valley.
The older portion of the facility features an old-style piano bar and a fireplace, very cozy in winter. There are larger and newer bar accommodations for weddings but the old bar is an easy and quiet place to converse and pass the time. There is an indoor heated swimming pool which entertains the children, and an outdoor one that some people say should be heated. A small gym helps guests stay in shape and is equipped with treadmills, bicycle exercisers, and a universal style exercise machine.
My favorite things about Stroudsmoor are the food, the quiet, and the pretty natural environment which is evident in the bridal paths and settings. Stroudsmoor offers a variety of wedding packages and lodging accommodations.
