The fifth grade is a great time for students to explore the realm of science. One way that you can do that is to participate in your school science fair. When developing your 5th grade science fair project you will want to focus on subjects that you are covering in this year’s science class like the function of cells.
Research the Background
The first step in completing 5th grade science fair projects is to research the background of your topic, in this case the function of cells. Your research can look into the various types of cells and what each type of cell does. As you conduct your research you will want to look for a specific function or type of cell that peaks your interest. For example, you may want to look at the cells that transport waste away from your organs, or that store various vitamins.
Develop a Hypothesis
The next step is to develop a hypothesis around the cell type that you identified. The hypothesis will predict how the cell or its function will react to an introduced variable. For example, your hypothesis could be something like, “red blood cells that are deprived of oxygen will turn blue.”
Develop an Experiment
Step three is to develop an experiment that will test your hypothesis. The experiment will need to be set up so that only one relationship is being tested. For example, for the hypothesis mentioned above the experiment would only want to look at how the amount of oxygen that red blood cells are exposed to impacts their color. To avoid errors in your results you will want to make sure that the only factor that you are manipulating in your experiment is the oxygen level. To rule out contamination you will want to use the exact same experimental processes and environment for each of your tests.
The data that you collect will measurements of oxygen saturation and cell color. To make analyzing your data easier to do you can assign a numerical value to color hues on a spectrum. For example, blue can be given a value of 0, purple can be given a value of 1 and red can be given a value of 2. Oxygen measurements can be measured using standard oxygen saturation meter readings.
Analyzing Your Data
The analysis of your data will involve a few of steps. First you will need to organize your data into tables or spreadsheets. You will then arrange data points by color. Then you will determine the mean, mode and medium for each color data set. Finally you will look for a pattern that will link the oxygen saturation of red blood cells and the color of the red blood cell.
