Susan Boyle’s semifinal performance on Britain’s Got Talent was expected to be Susan Boyle’s glorious encore. The semifinal performance for Susan Boyle was mostly judged against Boyle’s now iconic performance earlier in the competition. By the time the semifinals started, Boyle was a worldwide sensation, whose victory on Britain’s Got Talent was assured. After her semifinal performance, Boyle still seems safe, but a couple of criticisms seeped through this time.
Susan Boyle drew inspiration from another Broadway musical – this time Cats instead of Les Miserables, for her semifinal performance. When Boyle got started, a lot of the audience, judges and critics sensed something off, causing a bit of worry about her golden throat.
But most concluded that Susan Boyle rebounded brilliantly, making her semifinal performance of “Memory” from Cats another watercooler moment around the world. Yet with such a high standard set from her last performance, Boyle was set to receive some complaints that it wasn’t as sensational this time.
Right after Boyle was accused of being “wobbly” in her performances, reports alleged that Boyle cursed up a storm in anger after judge Piers Morgan praised an opponent. Other reports alleged that Boyle swore at people who were taunting her at her London hotel.
Now that Boyle mania is a few weeks old, it is easier for fans to ask questions of whether Boyle can continue her meteoric rise, and whether the pressure of instant fame can get to her. After these reports, fans may be fearing that it has.
But Piers Morgan himself defended Susan Boyle after her semifinal performance and reported tirades. Morgan told LBC radio that the pressure was getting to her in her semifinal performance, and asked for everyone to “slightly back off” until her nerves settle down.
Boyle has to recover in a short period of time, since the live final for Britain’s Got Talent is this weekend. Many still expect a Boyle blowout win – but that is what many expected of Adam Lambert before he was either defeated or robbed in the American Idol finale, depending on who you ask.
Susan Boyle may still be the darling of the world, but the world tends to ask “What have you done for me lately?” and pounce when the person in the spotlight doesn’t set the world on fire every time out. Boyle is now approaching that crucial time for a new celebrity, as well as a post-Britain’s Got Talent time that will be on her shortly.
But for now, the focus is on a return to Earth-shattering form for the finale on Saturday.
