With school letting out, kids of every age will be heading to the great outdoors. Here are some helpful tips to remember when spending time having fun in the sun.
Keep hydrated by drinking water or other non caffeinated beverages. The importance of staying hydrated can not be stated enough. Whether hanging out at the beach or standing in line at the amusement park, try to keep a bottle of water handy.
Protect Your Skin With Sunscreen
Nothing ruins a good time like sun burn. The sun burns hot, and we need to respect the power it has. Sunburn can occur with prolonged exposure to the suns harmful rays. Try keep some sunblock in the trunk of the car. You may have fun in the sun without it, but you may pay the price for several days after.
First Aid Kits
Remember that first aid kit Mom & Dad got for you. Keep it in the truck of the car, or a smaller one in a back pack. Cuts and scrapes happen, even to most sure footed of us. You can be the hero of the group just for having a bandage and some antibiotic ointment handy.
Be Sure Food Is Prepared Properly
Those impromptu barbecues are great. Nothing says summer like cooking over an open fire. Make it a point to know that what you are putting into your body has been cooked thoroughly. Undercooked beef and chicken can be serious health hazards, it only takes a few more minutes to cook them properly. Also be sure that the grill has been properly cleaned and maintained.
Wear Appropriate Clothes and Shoes
Conditions can change rapidly outdoors. Spare a few minutes to check the weather forecast before you head outdoors. Whether you are heading to the pool, the beach, or a friends house, check to see if you will be needing a sweat shirts for the cool nights or a heavier t-shirt for the afternoon. If you are going hiking, be sure to have proper footwear for the terrain. If you are going to be doing a lot of walking, you may want to give those open toes a second thought.
Protect Your Eyes
Sunglasses are not just fashion accessories. Sunglasses prevent the harmful UV rays of the sun from getting into our eyes and damaging our vision. Make sure you have a pair, or several pairs, that protect from UV rays. Do not forget to wear them.
Check the Car Out Before You Go
Seldom does a road trip with car trouble turn into a good time. Checking the oil and coolant levels before you head out only takes a few minutes. These few minutes can get you where you are going safely, and more to the point make sure you get there without a tow truck, or having to call Dad.
Make Sure Someone Knows Where You Are
The importance of contact information is essential. In todays’ cell phone culture, the value of knowing where someone is located is taken for granted. Sometimes plans change on the spur of the moment. Take a few seconds to send a text message to inform anyone as to who, what, where, and when. You can save the why, for when you are late for curfew.
Do Not Forget Water For Your Pets
If you will be spending time with your pets, do not forget to pack some water for them. Whether a stroll on the beach or a day at the park, your furry companion will appreciate a cool drink as a reward.
Know Who Is CPR or Life Saving Certified
This may seem like a no brainer in an area with a designated life guard. Chances are someone in your group has the proper certifications to save someones life. Maybe you have an interest in learning, courses are not expensive and only take a few days of training. Knowing who to contact in immediate need can be the difference between talking about it afterwords, or having a catastrophe.
Remember, fun in the sun is a great idea. Just remember to do it responsibly.
