When you take a look back over the music of the 80’s era the one striking point is the introductions of the synthesizer to the music world. Rock pretty much remains the same as it had been during the 70’s and there was a little more of the growing popular Hip Hop. Rock offered bands like Styx, Journey, and Aerosmith. Alternative rock entered the mainstream with bands such as U2 and R.E.M. Pop was represented by bands like Duran, Duran. The second half of the 80’s saw a rise in teen pop from artist such as New Kids on the Block, Debbie Gibson and New Edition. Urban pop included acts like Lionel Richie, Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson. Artist like Michael Jackson and Madonna would rule the charts for much of the decade and go on to become icons. Hip Hop was present in the 80’s and performed by such artists as Salt-N-Pepper and Run DMC.
Being a big fan of music then and now it is difficult to choose 1 favorite from so many great albums. But after considering everything that was out then I have selected Journey – Escape album released in July 1981.
Escape had several chart topping singles and so many memorable songs we all loved to sing along to. The band was using then new keyboardist Jonathan Cain when they produced this album. It was co-produced by Kevin Elson and one-time Queen engineer Mike Stone. There are beautiful ballads that show off the strong vocals of Steve Perry and rock staples like Stone in Love and Escape, the title cut.
Escape went on to become Journey’s biggest selling album yet and remains one of their most popular and best reviewed works. It has been certified 9X platinum by RIAA since its July 31, 1981 release. Its highest position on Billboard came in September 1981, when it booted Stevie Nick’s Bella Donna for the #1 spot.
This is a favorite of mine and many other 80’s music fans. Journey was always such a talented group and the songs were full of feeling and excitement. If you are interested in purchasing a copy of this album you can find it at the following dealers:
