Glycine has amazing psychiatric effects that are not appreciated by the medical community to this day. It is the simplest of the 20 amino acids. Glycine is an amino acid with the structure NH2CH2COOH. It is a natural substance. I have bipolar disorder. I have lived with changing mood swings my entire life. I have taken numerous medications which have failed. Glycine is truly remarkable. It has had a beneficial effect on my condition.
Comparing lithium carbonate to glycine, I would recommend glycine for mania. Lithium is attained through prescription, while glycine can be purchased at GNC. Lithium calms the mind, but also has numerous side effects which can include nausea, trembling, and fatigue to name a few. Its toxicity level is close to its therapeutic level. The benefit of lithium over glycine is that lithium helps with the depression portion of bipolar, while glycine does not.
Glycine gives you a calming feeling. If you’re upset or mentally overactive, the amino acid will calm you quickly after ingestion. Glycine hyperpolarizes nerve cells making it more difficult for them to fire. Nerve cells normally have a resting membrane potential around -60 mv. Glcyine decreases the resting membrane potential to lower than -60 mv. By doing this, it makes nerve cells more difficult to fire, causing a calming sensation in the brain. It acts quite quickly once ingested at around 500 mg. The amino acid has a calming effect within 20 minutes on an empty stomach.
Large amounts of glycine can be taken daily with minimal side effects. I have taken 5000 mg a day. One side effect that I have noticed is being slightly more fatigued. Another effect I noticed was developing a headache the day after I stopped taking it. Rarely, this amino acid can cause more difficulty breathing. Too much glycine over a period of time can cause you to be depressed though. Glycine is probably best used when needed. When you are very upset, or manic, then use it. Otherwise, it’s probably best not to use it on a daily basis. On the other hand, people do not all react the same way. So, a trial and error method of assessment maybe necessary to determine the amount and frequency at which it should be taken. For me, the amino acid was very helpful.
While no substance is perfect, glycine does have numerous positive benefits. It’s an amino acid that calms the mind quickly and effectively at 500 mg with minimal side effects. Anyone who has a condition, where their mind is overactive, may want to consider taking this amino acid.
