As horse lovers we feel the need to watch horse movies and read all the horse books we can get our hands on, let me tell you that there is nothing wrong with that. This list of books will help quench your horse thirst, at least for the time being. Having a love for these beautiful creatures when you are not able to be around them is hard but being able to read about them seems to help a bit, plus pass the time.
Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry was a favorite of mine while growing up. This book is perfect for horse lovers of all ages. This book is the first of the 4 Misty books. The others that follow are Stormy, Misty’s foal, Sea Star: Orphan of Chincoteague, and Misty’s Twilight. All absolutely incredible horse books. Marguerite Henry wrote all these amazing classic horse stories that leave me missing being able to go for a ride. Delight yourself reading about the wild ponies that get rounded up on “Pony Penning Day”. You will find yourself in love with Misty, a colt, of the Phantom and unable to put this book down and most likely going out to buy the others.
Riding Lessons by Sara Gruen, the author of Water for Elephants, is the first in her Annemarie Zimmer series. Sara Gruen delivers a perfect horse novel to the reader. Follow Annemarie’s story as she and her horse, Henry, are injured in jumping accident. Read about her ongoing struggles in life and the fact that she is not perfect or cut throat. This is a non-stop page turner. A book that will have you staying up past your bedtime to finish that chapter.
Flying Changes is the second book in her Annemarie series. Sure to keep your interest piqued as you go on to read more about Annemarie and her daughter Eve, who now is living the dream. Most likely Annemarie will again get on your nerves, but you have to love the fact she is not perfect. She is who she is. Sara Gruen did a fantastic job on this follow up to Riding Lessons.
Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans, is a beautifully portrayed story. If you watched the movie and have hesitancy about reading the book, I understand. Evans does a great job at painting a beautiful picture to his audience.
The Black Stallion books by Walter Farley, gives you a perfect read. take a while to make your way though them all. These books are great for every horse lover. Go through the amazing stories about the beautiful, black Arabian stallion. The movies where great, but the books are a must own for any horse enthusiast.
