Call them the human victory cigar, bench warmers, and scrubs, every team has that one player who bounces around the league and never really gets a fair shot at playing time, but some have lucked out and won championships! What is the difference between Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing, Tracy McGrady, and Jack Haley? Jack Haley has a championship ring! There are some NBA journeymen who will forever be remembered for cheering the team on during the most critical moments of the game and here are some of the NBA’s most famous scrubs.
Jack Haley has a career spanning nine seasons and three hundred games with averages of three points and three rebounds a game. The man has played with legends such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and David Robinson. During the 1995-1996 NBA season Haley played exactly one game for Chicago Bulls and tallied a season total of five points, but as luck would have it the Chicago Bulls coasted to a Finals win over the Seattle Supersonics. Why would Chicago keep him on? Apparently Jack Haley could the task no other human on earth can, keeping Dennis Rodman in check.
Want proof that anyone can succeed in life as long as they put forth the effort? Kurt Rambis wore thick glasses and a mustache Ron Jeremy would be proud to don. Rambis played fourteen seasons and though his highly usually appearance for the time would be enough to become a fan favorite, Rambis played harder than any other man in the NBA, cleaning up other player’s missed shots and some scrappy defense. While most snickered at the thought of Rambis playing professional basketball, this 6-10 gangly creature went on to win four championships with the show time Lakers.
Perhaps no other scrub in NBA history has garnered such fanatical, cult like support than Chucky Brown (How many scrubs actually have had unofficial fan web sites?). This ultimate underdog bounced around the world until 1995 when the Houston Rockets called him up after trading their long term power forward Otis Thorpe for Clyde “The Glide” Drexler”. It was Chucky’s heroic defense on Barkley that prompted the Chucker to ask “Chucky who?” The Rockets would go on to sweep the NBA finals over the favored Orlando Magic, but Chucky would win the hearts and minds of Rockets fans (perhaps too much). The Chucky Brown Fan Club also claims that a Chucky Brown curse befalls all who dare to cross him. Chucky Brown has been purported to cause the Rockets failure to reach the finals for over ten years, and even firing of NBA head coaches.
Who might take the mantle of the NBA’s greatest scrub? Ryan meets all the criteria, a tall, lanky, white guy who has more heart than he does talent. So be on the look out for Flyin’ Ryan Bowen, he will likely win some lucky team a championship in the near future!
