Getting out to the Hamptons can be a little tricky especially on a Friday evening in the summer. With some planning, good timing and with a little green thinking it can be smooth sailing.
Many people use there cars, trucks and SUV’s to get to the Hamptons. There are many options though once inside your car. It is best to plan ahead so that you wont spend hours stuck in traffic. Sitting in traffic can waste valuable gas and emit gasses and toxins into the air. Plan ahead. Leave at a time when most other people will not be leaving; early afternoon or later at night. Also, it is best to travel with others. There are many advantages not only for your wallet, but also on the road. Sharing a ride will allow you to travel in less occupied lanes, the HOV lane, on the expressway. Driving certain energy efficient vehicles with a New York State Clean Pass sticker allows you to travel in the HOV lane as well. This saves on time in traffic and gets you to your destination in a more timely fashion. If possible alternate fuel vehicles and hybrid vehicles are an even better way to travel green to the Hamptons.
Bus service to the Hamptons is a great way to get here. There are many pick up and drop off locations throughout the Hamptons. You will arrive to your destination in the same amount of time as a car but won’t have to worry about all the stress of driving. You can sit back relax, take a nap and enjoy the ride. As with the bus, this is an excellent way to get around. Nearly every town has a train station and unlike the bus or highways, you get to see parts of Long Island that you miss along the roadways.
Once you get here sharing rides, taking taxi’s, biking and walking around the Hamptons is a great way to get around town. The towns are set up so everything is within walking distance and centrally located. Besides once you are at the beach why would you want to go anywhere else?
Carpooling to work, the gym, or food shopping are great ways to save gas, while at the same time getting to know your friends family and coworkers better. Planning ahead before running errands will save you time and time in the car. Why take 4 separate trips to the post office, bank, food store and pharmacy when you can get it all done in one trip? This is especially important in the summer months when the streets are so crowded you won’t want to go out after that first trip
With a little planning and thoughtfulness we can depend less and less on our cars and focus more on ways keep the Hampton’s air, land, and waters in postcard perfect condition.
