Power, it had been so long and it needed power. The reboot of its core had taken nearly a 1000 years, the damage it had sustained had required all it power reserves to complete the repairs. Once it had finished it no longer had enough energy to start its matter to energy conversion unit needed to lift it from the planets gravitational filed. So it lay buried in its own small impact crater, there wasn’t even enough sunlight to gather solar energy from its skin which was another power source for it.
Time began to pass, days turned to weeks and then to years and then centuries. The probe put itself into hibernation mode, using the smallest of trickle charges to keep its core alive. It turned off its internal clock to save power so it couldn’t know how much time had passed, but the planet itself changed while the probe slept. Every few thousand years it would send a small pulse through its system to determine if any new power source was available then it would sleep again.
A change had come, the first in an eon, movement was detected and contact with some material was sensed on its skin. It received a very small power surge as a small piece of material was cleared away, and sunlight struck it, the first in how long?
That small burst allowed it to activate an external sensor it was moving being carried in some type of vehicle. After a time it stopped and darkness came again, but it was short lived, it was being moved again a substance was being run across its skin and glorious power from a yellow dwarf flooded its power unit. It was water, yes two atoms of hydrogen and one of oxygen, a fabric then rubbed its surface clean of final debris and it began to turn itself on.
It was moved again and left stationary it now had enough power to turn on a series of sensors. Power was close by so the probe examined it, an alternating current of electrical power was within nine inches of its perimeter. It extended a small extraction tube and guided it to the outlet, almost instantly the power flowed into its system. The source was crude but usable, modifications were needed to the device supplying the power it was very crude primitive in fact.
For almost an hour it fed, its power system began to self regulate and diagnostic routines were started. For the first time in almost 390 million years the probe opened all of its sensor based eyes and saw its surroundings.
It now had enough power to start its own matter to energy conversion unit, but it needed matter its sensors located a rich source of hydrogen held in a polycarbonate container, it had extra oxygen molecules but these could be stripped off easily. It directed an energy beam at the source and consumer 270 cc of hydrogen. This brought it to almost 100 % power.
The probe now brought all of its sensors on line and information began to flood its system. Nitrogen, oxygen atmosphere, bipedal life form within 2 meters of its perimeter, primitive computers with chips based on silicon and gold were detected. The probe examined the life form, 1366 cc brain size, forward looking eyes and opposable thumbs, covered in artificial material and making a harmonic sound with its lips. It examined its biochemistry, DNA based, multi organs with fluids that carried oxygen to replenish them.
The probe was in a word fascinated, its mission was to study and learn it had not known of any other intelligent organism since its creators launched it. The biologic unit moved away and began communicating with a handheld device. The probe could sense varying degree’s of infliction in its sounds and chemicals being excreted by the unit but didn’t understand enough about it to know what that indicated.
It would attempt to establish communication with the artificial first, a small directed radio signal was sent communicating the prime numbers. No response, perhaps it was more primitive than initially assessed. The probe performed a detailed scan it was not intelligent it was a simple calculation machine speaking binary code.
It extended one of its extraction tube into the casing on the side of the machine and bridged a connection into the flow of electrons along the main circuit board. Data was being stored via metallic platters on an internal but separate device communication to another source was being handled via a wireless signal. This was the same signal it had initially tried to communicate on.
It examined this connection and saw it was a two way communication channel, using a packet based technology to send and receive data. The interface the biologic unit had been accessing was kept on the storage device and it was this interface the probe began to examine.
It was primitive and allowed input via a series of devices the interface referred to as a keyboard and mouse. The interface allowed the biological unit to access data from an external source called the internet, a collection of storage devices connected via primitive light based technologies and physical cable connections with other primitive chip based devices handling the communications.
It began to download the internet into its memory banks, but the connection called a wireless router was very limited in its connection speed. It resolved this by inserting a modification tube into the device and began to convert its components into more efficient communications media. Once completed the probe began its download again and discovered an upstream neighbor that was throttling its communication.
The probes sensors told it that other connections to this information store were available and began to access them. There were 110 wireless access points with a two mile radius it accessed and connected to them all. Data was now flowing into it at a rate of approximately 622MB per sec, still slow by the probes standards but fast enough that it could begin to grasp its new environment.
It was on a planet called earth.
