The first year of teaching is a very stressful time. Too often new teachers become very sleep deprived as they move through the first year on the job. The job duties of teachers take up almost every waking hour during the early part of a career. Young teachers often find themselves staying up late just to get tests and assignments graded and lesson plans created.
Maintain a Set Hour to Go to Sleep
Thus it is crucial for new teachers to set a time to depart to bed each evening and stick with it. Adequate sleep is crucial to function well in a teaching job. Teaching requires a lot of energy and focus. Without enough sleep a new teacher may become overwhelmed and stressed.
Ensure you get eight hours of sleep each night. Give your body time to rejuvenate from the work day while you sleep.
Take time to exercise at least three times a week. Exercise helps the body release toxins and also helps one to have deeper sleep. Exercise also makes it easier to drop off to sleep.
Exercising will provide enormous benefits in increased energy levels and better health. Don’t scrimp on exercise even when your work load is overwhelming. Find the time to exercise no matter what; think of this as a present to your health and your emotional well being.
Eat nutritiously to obtain the best sleep. Avoid foods loaded with chemicals that may upset the stomach and make it hard to sleep. Also, stop eating at least several hours before bed time so that your body has time to start digesting the food. Don’t make your body work hard to digest a recent meal while you are trying to fall asleep. End meals well before bedtime to obtain the best rest.
At dinner have foods that may promote rest such as turkey, bananas, chamomile tea, and milk.
Meditating in the evening is a wonderful way to calm the mind to prepare for sleep. Find ten to 20 minutes to meditate in a quiet area where your mind and body can relax.
Avoid the Phone after 10 P.M.
Avoid making phone calls, or indeed even reading e-mail after 10 p.m. Focus on calming your body after 10 p.m. Do not get on the phone and get wound up with an intense discussion. Phone calls may waste a lot of time that could be used to sleep.
As one starts teaching it is crucial to start to shift much of the social life to weekends. Weeknights must be devoted to work issues, exercise, meditation, and then preparing to get to bed at an appropriate hour. While one may see and talk to friends on the phone during the week on occasion, it is best to focus on more serious issues as one starts a career and then catch up on socializing on the weekends.
Avoid Rash Purchases and Stick to a Budget
A teacher’s budget in the first few years on the job is often quite tight. Thus it is very important to stick to the budget. Financial stress will wreak havoc with the ability to sleep. So maintain your peace of mind and deep slumber by avoiding rash purchases and always remind yourself it is best to stick to your budget.
Many new teachers have college loans so paying them off must be the first priority. So avoid socializing with friends who encourage you to spend too much money. Maintain a lifestyle that works with your budget and allows you to pay off college loans as rapidly as possible.
