The causes of breast cancer are unknown; however doctors see a link between exposure to estrogen and the disease. The correlation of longer exposure to estrogen and breast cancer is very high; however this cannot always be helped. This article will take a look at 10 ways to help prevent breast cancer.
1. Have Many Children Early in Life
This may not be a feasible solution to many but having one or more children before the age of 30 will help prevent breast cancer. When the cycles of a women’s period is missed she is exposed to less estrogen which makes her less susceptible to the disease.
2. Breast Feeding
Though breast feeding does not stop ovulation it has been shown to help reduce the risk of breast cancer. There is a strong correlation to women who did not get the disease and women who breast fed.
3. Low Dietary Fat
A high fat intake has been shown to be a cause of breast cancer. This can be easily prevented by eating a low fat diet.
4. Limit Alcohol
Unfortunately for women having one or more drinks per day puts you at a 40% higher risk of getting breast cancer. Cutting back on alcohol consumption will greatly reduce this risk.
5. Regular Exercise
Along with the low fat diet regular exercise 2-5 times per week for about 45 minutes is recommended. Overweight and obese women have a higher risk of getting the disease.
6. Regular Breast Examination by Yourself and by a Doctor
Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women 35-50 so it is imperative that you check for abnormalities in both breasts at least twice a week. Regular checks and mammograms will greatly reduce breast cancer spreading if you do happen to get it; it is much easier treated if caught early.
7. Get Off the Pill!
Studies have shown a link to prolonged birth control pill use and breast cancer. It is recommended to not take the pill for longer than 10 consecutive years and stop in your 30’s; there are many alternate methods of birth control to explore.
8. Fish Oil
Fish oil has been shown to help greatly reduce the risks of breast cancer due to its Omega-3 fatty acid.
9. Medical History
The BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene if abnormal will give you a great chance of getting breast cancer. This is something that can be found out, if you do have this gene you may have an 80% higher chance of getting certain types of breast cancer. If this is the case the previous prevention methods should be strictly enforced.
10. Less Meat High Soy Diet
Eating meat has some correlation to breast cancer, try soy or tofu instead. I have made great stir fries with tofu; you can barely taste the difference between that and meat. If nothing else this is good for you anyway, so not only could it help prevent breast cancer but it will also help you eat in portion controls.
