The 2009-2010 fantasy football draft will be here before long and owners are going to be getting together their sleeper lists. A fantasy football sleeper is defined as a player you feel will outperform his draft position. At the tight end position, John Carlson was this type of player last season. Carlson was taken low at the tight end position but heated up come playoff time and was able to help his owners propel to fantasy football titles.
Here is my list of the top 5 fantasy football sleepers at the tight end position for 2009-2010:
#1 Sleeper Greg Olsen- TE Chicago
Greg Olsen had to love the news he heard when the Bears trade for Jay Cutler. Olsen is a great receiving tight end with breakaway speed for that position. Cutler automatically will vault Olsen to top 8 tight end status and it is not unlikely that he finishes the season around fifth. Put Greg Olsen on the top of your tight end sleeper list for your 2009-2010 fantasy football draft.
#2 Sleeper Kellen Winslow- TE Tampa Bay
Many fantasy owners have been burned by Winslow lately and will not draft him this season. That should push Winslow further down in the fantasy football draft then he is capable of performing. Kellen Winslow is and will be a injury risk but if you do not get one of the top 5 tight ends he is worth the gamble. Make sure if you pick up Winslow at your 2009-2010 fantasy football draft that you also pick up a tight end later in the draft that poses little injury risk.
#3 Sleeper Brandon Pettigrew- TE Detroit
Pettigrew could be the 2009 version of John Carlson as far as fantasy rookie tight ends go. Pettigrew was drafted with the 20th pick in the first round of the draft and is a great receiving tight end. He has size and decent speed. Do not look for him to start the 2009-2010 season on fire but he could heat up come fantasy football playoff time. Pettigrew is a definite sleeper that you should not let go late in your fantasy draft.
#4 Sleeper Vernon Davis- San Francisco
Vernon Davis is on my sleeper list at tight end every season and never seems to live up to his potential so you might not want to follow my advice on this one. On the other hand, this guy is a phenomenal athlete and could put it all together one of these seasons to be a Antonio Gates type of player. Put Vernon Davis on your sleeper list for the 2009-2010 fantasy football draft but make sure you pick a more solid tight end choice to start for your team.
#5 Sleeper Jeremy Shockey- New Orleans
It is sad to see that Shockey has dropped so far as a fantasy football tight end that he could qualify for a sleeper list. He has not bee that good of a player the last few seasons but he still has talent and Drew Brees at quarterback. Take a chance on him if he falls to far in your fantasy football league draft.
This concludes the list of tight end sleepers. Tight end is not always the most exciting position to draft but can make a difference in who wins and who loses come playoff time. If you can hold off at tight end to and get top of the position production from one of the names on this list then you will be that much closer to winning your fantasy football 2009-2010 title.
