A huge fan of movies, I have been to the theater almost every week this summer. From animated family films to chick flicks to testosterone-laden action movies, the top 5 movies of summer 2009 span every genre in the film-making industry. I’ve enjoyed many of this summer’s offerings but these are my favorite 5 so far and why.
Disney Pixar hit gold again as only they can do. The simple story of coming to understand what is important in life is told through the eyes of Carl an elderly man who’s lost his wife and Russell, the 8 year old Explorer Scout who is searching for a friend. The two embark on an unlikely adventure when Carl attempts to relocate his home to land of his and his wife’s dreams by attaching thousands of helium -filled balloons to it. Russell is an inadvertent stowaway and the two are stuck with each other. Artistry and color make this as magical as any previous Pixar film and the story will have you reaching for the tissues long before you know what hit you, making it my family pick for the Top 5 movies of Summer 2009.
A film with plenty of action and good looking people to watch seldom has much of a plot line. Terminator makes the Top 5 Movies of Summer 2009 because it has just that – a great story. We learn more about all of our favorite characters as the next chapter fills many of the details. With Christian Bale anchoring the movie, several lesser known actors show they have the chops to stand toe to toe with him. Sam Worthington provides the surprise as both the protagonist of the story and actor capable of upstaging Bale. Dark, foreboding and jam packed with the CGI tricks Terminator films are famous for, Terminator Salvation is my action pick for the Top 5 Movies of Summer 2009.
My Sister’s Keeper
I think this movie will be one of the films to beat come Oscar time. Drama is at its all-time high as far as the films from summer 2009 go. When you link the subject of cancer with a sibling’s choice not to donate a kidney to save her sister’s life, it can be no other way. Kate and Anna are moving and utterly believable as sisters struggling to do the right thing. Their choices may not be your choices but you cannot help but be drawn into their story which is why it’s my drama pick for the Top 5 movies of Summer 2009.
No list of Top 5 Movies would be complete without a romantic comedy, affectionately known as the chick flick. Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds are easy on the eyes. Your eyes will appreciate that as in one scene in particular, you get to indulge in a big way. The story is a bit unbelievable but they make it work, taking us along for a comical ride as they come to know each other’s more sensitive side. There are several good chick flicks out there this year but this is my pick for the Top 5 Movies of Summer 2009.
Taking top honors for the comedy category, The Hangover is every wedding party’s worst nightmare. Too much partying leaves the groomsmen in a complete fog about what happened the night before. Aside from finding some bizarre items in the hotel suite the morning after the party, it seems they’ve lost one or two things, most importantly the groom. The rest of the movie has the buddies trying to figure what happened and where the groom could be before the wedding which is only hours away.
