When a baby is experiencing tummy pain it is almost as painful for the parents to watch their little baby suffer from gas as it is for the baby to endure it. Be optimistic though; my first child, Hope, was a gassy baby and my experience helped to create this list of the top 5 must-have products for moms with a gassy newborn.
Find the Right Bottle
First thing’s first, every baby needs to eat, right? The bottle and liners that seemed to work the best for Hope were the Playtex Drop-Ins. Babies-R-Us claims that, “The Playtex pre-formed Drop-Ins liners contract as baby feeds, preventing a vacuum from forming in the bottle. They are clinically shown to reduce colic, gas and spit up as no air mixes with the milk and baby doesn’t ingest air.” Because I was also breastfeeding these bottles worked wonderfully. The nipples are designed to mimic the natural nipple making latching on less confusing. My daughter’s pediatrician also suggested that I watch my own diet, limiting my intake of gassy foods which helped clean up the milk that Hope was consuming when she nursed.
Drops, Drops, Drops!
Giving your gassy newborn Infant’s Mylicon Gas Relief drops after feeding will also help to instantly break up the gas bubbles from the air that they ingested while eating. This product is great because the drops are alcohol free and safe to use at every feeding for the reason that they are not absorbed into your baby’s system. Giving Hope a few drops before her nighttime feeding helped her to sleep more comfortably as well.
Yes! Chances are that if your baby is gassy, your baby is also going to be fussy. Using a baby sling has multiple benefits. First of all you can sling your newborn in such a way that applies a little pressure on their belly from your ribcage giving them relief. Second, you can carry your newborn with you for longer periods of time without your back, arms, or neck getting sore with this product. Lastly, your hands are free allowing you to move around more freely and to do things like snack on graham crackers or check your e-mail.
Herbal Oils make massaging your gassy newborn easier. With this product your hands can move across their little body in a more natural, flowing way and certain scents will help to calm your baby as well. Part of our nighttime ritual included Hope’s tummy massage at 7:30 or so. I would lay her on her back facing me and gently make a seven starting at the lower left of her ribcage, going right, and then making the stem of the number extend down across her side, ending just below her belly button. Word of warning though, my daughter still asks me for massages everyday and the massage will produce a bit of gas.
Fisher-Price Papasan Infant Seat
Sleep, yes the necessity. Coming home late one night from visiting a relative I brought Hope in the house, but left her in her car seat because she was sleeping so soundly. I discovered that when Hope was sitting at a slight upright angle she would sleep for longer periods of time. The advantages of the Fisher-Price Papasan Infant Seat are the following: The product sits at a nice angle allowing your gassy baby to sit up a little as they sleep, the seat is small enough to put inside your baby’s crib, you can fold it up and take it with you easily, it has a vibrating mechanism that can soothe your gassy baby, and the product has a three point harness for safety.
So there you have it, my top 5 must-have products for moms with a gassy newborn. Hopefully my experience with my sweet, little, gassy baby will help parents out there soothe their own gassy babies and perhaps get a few more hours of sleep.
