As a child growing up in England, I used to play a lot of board games with my parents. Every Christmas, there would be at least one board game in my pile of gifts and we’d always play at least one game on Christmas Day. Fast forward a few decades and most of these board games are now classic or vintage board games. Over the last few years, family board games have become really popular and many families are now playing games together, often playing the reissued classic board games that were popular when I was a kid. If you’re looking for a classic board game to play with your family, why not buy one of these vintage board games. They’re fun, not too expensive and a great way to spend some family time together.
Monopoly – My favorite board game when I was growing up was Monopoly. I had the classic version of Monopoly with the whole idea of Monopoly being to amass as much real estate as you can, build houses and hotels on it, and then tax the heck out of your opponents. Monopoly now has many versions with American universities putting out their own versions, and even certain cities having Monopoly games where the streets and roads of their city replace the Mayfairs of long ago. One of the best places to buy vintage Monopoly is on Ebay as sellers here have vintage Monopoly board games that are even collectors’ items. A vintage Monopoly game starts at only $9.99 with many different versions available. New Monopoly board games are available at Toys R Us, starting at only $12.99 both online and in stores. Game stores too are a great place to buy Monopoly and other board games. Many malls have game stores where you’ll find almost any board game you’re looking for.
Risk – Risk is a classic board game I didn’t start playing until college. In Risk, the idea is to start off as the ruler of certain countries and then try to expand your domain until you own most of the world. In college, I was part of a group of friends who were all international students and our favorite time to pass a Friday night was with a good Indian meal, a couple of drinks and a round of Risk. If you get really serious, playing Risk can take all night as you defeat your opponent and take over his countries and then someone else starts to come after you. Risk is also available as a computer game but, for me, it’s nowhere near as much fun as the vintage board game I used to play. Risk is also fun as a family board game, as it teaches strategy skills, which are really important for kids and adults alike. You can buy Risk at Toys R Us, Target, or any number of specialty game shops starting at around $19.99.
Scrabble – As a kid, I loved playing Scrabble especially when I played it with my parents and could beat them. We even bought Travel Scrabble, another classic board game that we used to play on long trips in the car. In Scrabble, the point of the game is to put down the most difficult words on the board, so that you gain the most points. Scrabble is a great board game for kids as it teaches them to spell as well as how to rationalize the best way to get the most points. Scrabble is still available now in both vintage board game and new board game versions. You can buy vintage versions of Scrabble on EBay and Toys R Us and Target sell Scrabble starting at $14 for the classic version and $13.99 for Scrabble for Juniors.
Twister – Still technically a board game because you play Twister on an enormous plastic board with your body as the game pieces. In Twister, you spin the dial and then have to move your hands and feet to the position the dial tells you to go. During which time, you are wrapped around your opponents body but you cannot fall. If you fall, you’re eliminated. Twister is not only a fun family board game, it’s also great exercise. Twister is available at Toys R Us, Target and specialty game stores with a starting price of only $12.99.
Taboo – Taboo was another classic board game I used to play with my family. Taboo is good for small groups and big groups with the point of the game being that your team members have to guess the word you have on a card, without you saying certain words. If you say one of the forbidden words, it’s ‘Taboo’ and you lose that round. A fun board game for kids and adults alike, Taboo is on sale online at Toys R Us, in Toys R Us shops, at Target stores and many specialty game stores, starting at $19.99.
Any of these five classic or vintage board games are fun board games for all the family. They require a lot more thought and brain power than do some of today’s modern games but, for me, they’ve definitely held their appeal. Thirty years after playing my first game of Monopoly, Risk, Scrabble, Twister or Taboo, I get just as much enjoyment out of them as I ever did. You probably will too.
