The founder of Sea Island Company was Hoard Coffin the automotive pioneer who launched the
Hudson Motor Company. Coffin purchased tracts of land on St. Simons Island and a sliver of land now known as Sea Island. The golf course, designed by Walter Travis, opened in 1927 and quickly became popular with golfers.
