Strategy games included RPG’s, real time strategy games and also a few unconventional but nonetheless strategic based video games. These games are all about engaging your mind and playing out your personal style through intricate strategies and choices. Using tactical and logistic choices made these games unique and rushed in yet another new era for gamers far and wide. Here are my personal top ten list of best strategy video games ever made.
1. Populous: The Beginning
I liked this game and chose it as my number one for it’s unique style. This is a PC based video game that came out in 1998 by Bullfrog Productions but later in 2007 finally came out for PlayStation. This was known as a 3-D strategy game. Why the top of the list though? Simply because the main character was a Shaman. What more do I need to say?
2. Command and Conquer : Tiberium Wars
Another classic PC game which debuted around 1995 but is still very popualr today with newer versions released in the 2000’s. Red Alert was the next ultimate Command and Conquer game to come out on not just the PC but also PS3 and X-Box systems. This game is a war based strategy game where you are the leader of an army commanding your troops to different areas to engage in battles to take over bases and sections of land.
3. Warcraft: Orcs & Humans
How can I not put in the most played strategy game around the world, Warcraft. This is the original Warcraft and the first of The World Of Warcraft series. This debuted in 1994, another excellent strategy game by Blizzard Entertainment which was only the first of many to come. This is a real-time strategy game as opposed to a turn based strategy game. It takes place in the infamous Kingdom of Azeroth and given pleasure to young and old gamers alike. This was an original CD-Rom both single player and multi-player PC game.
3. Warcraft II : Tides of Darkness
This game was originally created for MS-DOS for Mac users but of course had to be available to all the PC players or it may have caused some huge riots around the world. This was released in April of 1996 by Blizzard Entertainment gaining popularity instantly to become deemed game of the year. This game included pre-rendered 3D graphics which really stepped it up from the original Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. This game featured a single player campaign played through your computer or an internet based multi-player campaign. Both became extremely popular reckoning in a new era for online gamers and Warcraft fans.
Blizzard Entertainment hit the mark with another fictional real-time strategy game released in 1998. This is a military/army based sci-fi game that was set in the future of the 26th century. Characters ranging from humanoids to insectoids fighting over the Milky Way Galaxy was something to talk about, play, ponder over and definitely one to get in my top ten strategy games.
5. Roller Coaster Tycoon
I know this one is corny as hell and definitely a different based PC game but I had to include it. I was introduced by my grade school to this game and every computer period if we were lucky we got to play Roller Coaster Tycoon. In this game you own and buy a dinosaur based roller coaster park where you controlled duties like setting up the park design, putting in concession stands and daily expenses and profits. I think it was a great game for kids to get a sense of owning and running a business with the unusual twist of buying and presenting ancient creatures at an amusement park.
6. Civilization 2
Civ. 2 was even better the the first Civilization game. This is a turn based strategy game as opposed to a real-time which are like most of the other games in my list. I always hated waiting for the PC opponents turn but if you skip it, I found it lame too. This started out as a PC only game but after great popularity moved to the PlayStation network as well.
7. Warhammer: Dark Omen
This is another real-time war tactical based strategy game. It is the second Warhammer game as the sequel following after Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat however I prefer it over the first one. With 3D terrain and 2D sprites this game gives you the the bird’s eye view for playing and was based on the tabletop fantasy game Warhammer Fantasy Battle.
8. World In Conflict
An incredibly hot video game created by Massive Entertainment is yet another real-time strategy video game. This is a newer game that debuted in 2007 but was based in 1989 during the economic collapse and falling of the Soviet Union. This game was a very social and political based war game.
9. Dune II : The Building Of A Dynasty
This game is a classic of all classics and was also known as Dune II : Battle For Arrakis. This was one of the first and front runner real-time strategy games to come out. This computer game was released in 1992 by Westwood studios based on the 1984 movie Dune. If you’ve played the game, why not check out the movie too.
10. Age Of The Empires
Age of the Empires is a series of games that was first released in 1997. It has a total of something like 7 or 8 games in the total series and a few spin-offs. This is also a real-time strategy game but this one created by Ensemble Studios. This game is based on colonizing nations and mythology.
As you can tell by my top ten list of best strategy games ever created I prefer real-time strategy games over turned based games. If this article interests you be sure to leave a comment telling me your favorite real-time or turn based strategy game of all time and have fun coming up with strategical moves and playing all of these awesome intellectual games.
