The best running places in my home town was in formation in about 1994. I was able to “walk” on it in 1995 when I was getting exercise with my 19 month old first daughter and my yet unborn son. They even posted my picture on the front of the Mayor Campaign (I’m not sure which mayor). It was a good campaign and I believe he won, but sadly I’ve forgotten who it was at the time, so I don’t want to say and be wrong. Any comments added here to remind me will be gladly accepted. I’ll blame it on the foggy brain of a pregnant woman!
It is still be used everyday by runners all over this town. It is also a walking trail and bike trail as well. People speedwalk, jog run, ride bikes and they used to rollerblade but they don’t allow that anymore. I do see some get away with rollerblading, however. It goes from way out to almost the end of the airport property where they have built a new fire station here recently all the way through a wooded area that has been there already in existence at Woodlawn hospital and then the full length of the golf course.
I would have to actually ask someone or drive to find an estimate of how long it is, but I would guess at least 3-4 miles if not more. It is constantly being utilized whether by bikers, families, individuals or professional speed walkers and runners.
Other than that there are great roads to run on (and people do) in Manitou Heights. It’s just a giant type subdivision that people walk and run their dogs. Some walk on the road and some on the sidewalk. It is a fairly quiet neighborhood and people sometimes prefer that instead of the walking/running trail.
I would definitely recommend the walking trail that was built just for us that I have preceded with. I also like the idea that it is in the open for the most part, so if you did get injured, someone would surely notice. I’d also recommend using it during peak times such as mornings, afternoons and evenings but not necessarily at night. Of course with any type of thing like that, I believe you should carry mace or something. Nothing has ever happened that I know of but my dad was a police officer so it’s just always on my agenda and it can’t hurt.
There is also a nature reserver that is out off of one of the lake roads. It isn’t necessarily for running but it’s perfect for walking. It is made up of grassy trails with long grass growing up around the trails themselves. It is beautiful and peaceful. If you go in the evenings or early mornings, you might want to consider bug spray, however bug spray and sunscreen is recommended for any type of walking or running for certain times of day.
You should always ask your doctor before going out on any of these ventures. Always drink plenty of water. Last but certainly not least you should do stretching exercise.
That brings me to another point about the walking trail which anyone would love. There are benches all the way throughout the course. You can if you must, sit down, but also there are signs with activities that you can stop and do. What a great way to keep fit.
