There is something about hitting the open road in the summertime that makes you want to crank up the music, sing like no one can hear you, beat the drums on the steering wheel and rock and roll right down the road.
In order to do this you need a good mix. This is the perfect road trip playlist. Download these songs to your MP3, upload them from individual discs onto one disc and get the perfect rhythm to get on the road. The destination really doesn’t matter, getting there is half the fun.
Get with good company and choose from this playlist, or use everything. I haven’t short-changed you. This is a three hour playlist. It will not get you everywhere, but it will definitely get you on the road and help you get the creative juices flowing to create your own ultimate road trip playlist.
Kokomo – The Beach Boys – 3:35
Get the wheels rolling and good vibrations started with The Beach Boys. We won’t go into The Beach Boys overkill, but every now and then we’ll add a song of theirs to keep your feelings up and that get-away feeling moving through your veins.
American Pie – Don McLean – 8:36
This has to be one of the ultimate songs for the road. It is an iconic pop song at the least and will keep your juices for the journey flowing.
Respect – Aretha Franklin – 2:24
It doesn’t matter if you are male or female, by the time you have played the first two song and are well on your way everyone will love to sing along to this well-known MP3 on your playlist. That’s the whole purpose of an MP3 road trip playlist, to have fun, sing along, get loose, and get to your destination with everyone happy.
Let it Whip – Dazz Band – 3:21
Brought to you from Motown, this is another song that you will keep you in the groove. It is a change up from the previous songs, so your MP3 road trip playlist will not get monotonous. Let it Whip will make you want to let it rip!
Beat It – Michael Jackson – 4:18
We couldn’t leave the King of Pop off the road trip playlist. Besides after you whip it, I suppose you have to beat it. In any event, you will want to beat your way out of town to the rocking rhythms of the master of pop. We’ll see him on our MP3 playlist again, just not too soon. Remember, balance is the key to a good playlist.
When Doves Cry – Prince – 3:48
After you get all keyed up, you need a song to settle you down. Otherwise, you’ll lose your get-up-and-go before you get out of town. Plus, you need an occasional down song to allow for conversation in the car. Something that allows nappers their chance to get to sleep — NOT. When Doves Cry doesn’t slow you down to a standstill by any means. It is different and provides a unique break at the right time.
Proud Mary – (Rolling on the River) – Creedence Clearwater Revival – 3:59
Keep it rolling. It doesn’t really matter if you are on the river or not, Creedence Clearwater Revival will take you there regardless of your true destination. It’s another older song, but will begin to pick up the pace following Prince.
Drift Away – Rod Stewart – 3:44
It’s all about getting away. It’s not a matter of whether or not you know where you are going. Enjoy a mellow Rod Stewart with Drift Away, then we’ll bump it way up.
Down – Jay Sean featuring Lil’ Wayne – 3:32
A jammin’, updated musical follow-up to Rod Stewart features Jay Sean with his hit single Down. This is a relatively new song from the UK singer turned US record maker, but Jay Sean and Down are bound to be around for a long time.
Boom, Boom, Pow – Black Eyed Peas (edited version is my choice) – 4:11
Regardless of your age, if you are young enough to be on a road trip, you are young enough to add Black Eyed Peas to your playlist. This is where your playlist makes a quick trip to music here and now.
The great thing about your road trip MP3 playlist is that it cuts across generational lines. It is designed to roll back convertible top and just enjoy the rhythm. (You won’t hear many of the words with the top down anyway.)
Infinity – Guru Josh Project – 6:29
If you could drive that far, would you go to infinity and beyond? Let Infinity start you on your way.
Runaway Car – Matt Kearney – 4:11
In this single MP3 for your ultimate road play list Matt Kearney questions whether he should be in a runaway car. I’m sure you won’t be questioning your road trip, even as you enjoy the trip through this Kearney song.
Go – My Favorite Highway – 3:36
Go will start revving the musical engine again, setting us up for another complete round of road trip mania MP3s.
Billie Jean – Michael Jackson – 4:52
No better song to ride away with than Billie Jean. You would ride if you had the kind of accusation Billie Jean brings. Get back in the groove with Michael Jackson.
Authority Song – John Cougar Mellancamp – 3:49
Authority Song has great rhythm. This is a great Mellancamp song that has been enjoyed by many people over the years. It will help the miles keep speeding behind you.
Just What I Needed – The Cars – 3:44
The Cars will bring in a different beat. After eight more songs that have kept your adrenaline pumping it is time for another song that allows you to catch your breath, get your bearings and make sure you didn’t get lost while you were wrapped up in the previous songs. Again, it doesn’t slow your MP3 road playlist down too much, just enough to mix it up a bit and set you up for some more Beach Boys.
I Get Around – The Beach Boys – 2:15
In keeping with the road trip theme The Beach Boys will make you want to rev your engine. Now, hold it steady even when the beat makes you want to fly down the road. Fly with the music, not the speed of your car. This song is a must have on any MP3 road trip playlist.
California Girls – The Beach Boys – 2:47
I Get Around will rev you up and you’ll want more Beach Boys, so the only back-to-back band on your MP3 road trip play list is The Beach Boys. I have to say, they’ve earned the spot.
Margaritaville – Jimmy Buffet – 4:11
A little mellow, but no less appropriate. This is another one of those sing-along songs that will help loosen everyone up. By this point you will have been on your journey for some time, so you’ll be happy for a break in the music that will get everyone occupied. Enjoy Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville as your next song.
Pump It – Black Eyed Peas – 3:33
Get ready to crank the car stereo all the way up. It’s time for the Black Eyed Peas again. This time, they will tell you to pump the music up in their hit song Pump it Up.
Right Round – Flo Rida – 3:24
A good follow-up song to Black Eyed Peas on your playlist, Flo Rida is a little bit rap and a little bit pop. In any event, it will keep a high energy feel moving as you are cruising.
Gotta Be Somebody – Nickelback – 4:13
Nickelback offers smooth sounds with no holds barred lyrics. Gotta Be Somebody speaks volumes. It may even offer you insight into your own reasons for being on the road.
Let Me Be Myself – 3 Doors Down – 3:48
How can you be somebody if you can’t be yourself? You can’t. That’s why this song makes such a perfect follow-up to Nickelback’s last MP3 on your playlist.
Wake up Call – Maroon 5 – 3:21
Personally, I don’t care for the lyrics, however, the music and rhythm redeem the song. It’s just a fun, funky addition to your road trip playlist to add a little unique twist. You don’t want the music to get too routine and boring.
Don’t Stop Believing – Journey – 4:09
You are on the road. You have a purpose. Make a statement about that purpose and your destiny with this song by Journey. Load it up to your MP3 or download it to your road trip CD and you’ll learn to enjoy the timeless sounds of Journey.
Tattoo – Jordan Sparks – 3:52
The former American Idol star has a mellow sound, but keeps it in the round. Enjoy another refreshing change in sounds as you motor down the road by adding Jordan Spark’s Tattoo to your MP3 road trip playlist.
Thriller – Michael Jackson – 5:12
Jack the music and rhythm back up with the King of Pop, Michael Jackson and his number one hit Thriller. This song is so good you may want to play it twice, because you know you’ll have the video in your head while the MP3 plays.
Womanizer – Britney Spears – 3:44
Whether you are a woman or a womanizer, you’ll enjoy the beat and rock feel of Britney Spears’ hit Womanizer. It is a funky, modern day follow-up to Michael Jackson’s thrills.
When I Grow Up – The Pussycat Dolls – 3:53
Maybe you are grown up, but as they say, age is just a number, especially when you are on a road trip. So, why not add The Pussycat Dolls’ When I Grow Up to your ultimate road trip playlist? We have very few female singers on the playlist, so this song will flow as a nice follow-up to Britney Spears.
It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me – Billy Joel – 2:57
We can’t leave Billy Joel out of your ultimate MP3 road trip playlist.
Billy Joel rounds out a two hour playlist that covers a variety of pop and rock music that you can enjoy on a road trip alone or with your friends. (Actual playtime approximately 123 minutes, 18 seconds.)
All MP3s listed in the road trip playlist are available for download from iTunes or Amazon.com. You can compose your own MP3 playlist using CD’s and uploading them to your computer to create one road trip CD or your ultimate road trip MP3 playlist.
