While recently taking the weekend in Vernon, New Jersey, my wife and I were fortunate enough to stumble on Little Anthony’s Pizzeria and Restaurant. We were in Vernon on a Friday night and Friday night has long been the traditional “pizza night” in my family; so finding Little Anthony’s in a town otherwise bereft of restaurant options was a lucky strike indeed. we ordered out a pizza because we were staying at the lovely Alpine Haus Bed and Breakfast in Vernon, New Jersey and we were looking to really enjoy our stay.
Whenever visiting a new pizza joint, I’m usually careful not to set my hopes too high. Any who know me or have read this column already know that there is one pizzeria on the east coast which keeps me in New York City and one pizzeria which I will invariably miss when my wife and I exit, stage left. However, we were in fine spirits with our wonderful hosts and comfortable accommodations for the night and when we got our cheese pizza, we coupled this with a new bottle of wine, which is always fun.
But Little Anthony’s is more than just a pizzeria; in fact many residents of Vernon or the surrounding area traveled in, said “hi”, got tables, argued over prices, got take out, and were on their way, all while we were trying to decide on a size pizza to get. Needless to say, Little Anthony’s is a local haunt for the local locals.
Little Anthony’s does have many other options for those not interested in pizza. At Little Anthony’s you can get a full selection of appetizers, salads, Stromboli, calzone, hot heroes, cold heroes, items from the grill (pizza burger, rib eye steak), Greek specialties (gyro), pasta, eggplant, seafood, veal, chicken, Panini, wraps, quesadilla, and of course a variety of pizzas.
The pizza at Little Anthony’s was pretty good. It had a very doughy consistency, which I can appreciate (I’m more of a “cake” guy than a “frosting” guy). That’s not to say that the cheese or sauce were bad; they were just noticeably overmatched by the doughy consistency of our particular pie. The cheese was good and the sauce was not obtrusive; moreover the pie was not all that oily, which was refreshing.
For folks who know and for folks who don’t, Little Anthony’s is in the A&P Shopping Plaza in Vernon, New Jersey. Also worth mentioning is that if you happen to be in Vernon on a Tuesday night you might want to stop in to Little Anthony’s and bring your appetite; they have all you can eat Tuesday night pizza night for just $5.99 for in house guests.
